Babur – London

Babur is my go to local Indian restaurant I have eaten there many times and never had an unpleasant plate of food.

Quite hot spice wise but the taste is incredible, rich curry and light fluffy rice and meat that you could cut with a fork.

What could be better than treating yourself to a takeaway from a modern Indian restaurant that has been lauded by such heavy weights as the Michelin Guide, Hardens, Sunday Times and many others.

And having spiced custard gave it that twist that Babur is so good at.

They have cracked that very hard nut of having a cool modern restaurant with what I call ‘new Indian’ food that isn’t weird or odd but just very good.

The mere fact that the cocktail menu was tempting enough to lure me from the normality of my North London comfort zone to so far south of the river it’s like entering the Twilight Zone is telling.

Food and drinks alike at Babur are fragrant, fresh, and clean; the refinement allowing you savour each and every flavour, both on the plate and in the glass.

Alphonso mango nectar stands in for tomato in the ‘Bloody’ version of this beverage, lashed with lime, Worcester sauce, green chilli and black pepper to dangerously gluggable effect.

It’s refreshing to see such an extensive cocktail menu at an Indian restaurant, and more so still to see seasonal change in the well-executed, well-priced list.

The companion’s White Garden has a pretty perfume of jasmine and elderflower, ideal with the sharp lime cream that accompanies a clever pudding of a spirit-soaked vada – the little lentil donut making for a sort of subcontinental spin on a rum baba.

Babur - London Restaurant Reviews | Hardens

"The fixed price tasting menu with wine pairings is well thought through and excellent every time.

On my most recent visit the menu comprised of: Scallop with Prawn, Chicken tikka and cottage cheese, red deer with quail breast and finally the outstanding 100 hours marinated steamed shoulder of lamb.

The marinated steamed shoulder was absolutely fantastic."

Babur Indian restaurant Brockley – My Hidden Gems

So when Sharps said he fancied going for dinner somewhere local I suggested we try Babur Indian restaurant in Forest Hill/Brockley.

From the moment we sat down at Babur Indian restaurant we were salivating at the food the table next to us had ordered.

Eventually I plumped for the fish, spice-roasted barramundi in a sweet and sour coconut sauce, with red onion and mint ghee rice.

Meanwhile Sharps was attempting to choose between a dish of clove-smoked buffalo cooked in a Rajasthani-spiced hot masala, the seared Gressingham duck breast with sweet and sour plum sauce and carrot masala and rabbit with mustard and ginger, cooked in rabbit broth.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that although it may seem a bit pricey for a neighbourhood restaurant some of the mains do come with rice or a poppadom so you don’t need to order side dishes separately.
