Immigration police storm Highgate Indian restaurant to arrest ...

Diners watched on in shock as immigration police swooped on an Indian restaurant in Highgate last night to arrest a man on suspicion of working there illegally.

“There was a police van parked outside with ‘immigration’ on it and they had it on the backs of their uniforms as well.

The restaurant was among several businesses across the capital stormed by immigration officers yesterday and today following allegations of illegal working as part of a Home Office crackdown on the employment of illegal migrants.

David Seymour-Smith, head of the north London Home Office Immigration Enforcement team, said: “There will be no slow down in our efforts to tackle illegal working in London.

He urged anyone with information about suspected immigration abuse to contact the Home Office at or to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Virtual reality is big these days, and this second, Highgate branch of a popular Queen’s Park Puglian restaurant does a great job of tricking you into believing you’re within earshot of cicadas, buzzing mopeds and distant speedboats.

The hostess was all big gestures and warm welcomes as I stepped into its lively and airy one-floor space done up to look like the stucco-heavy real thing, with its rough white walls, wooden tables and tiled floor.

Ten minutes later, as the wine arrived (a great Puglian red), the same woman was dancing with an elderly man wearing a ‘Godfather’ T-shirt, who soon threw her over his shoulder.

I tried these as part of an arrosto Pugliese, a mixed dish which also included lamb neck, mushrooms and salad.

With ample space and big tables, this would be a great place to go with a gang of friends or family.
