Chutney Mary | Best Indian Restaurant | St James's | London | Home

Chutneys Indian Restaurant, 11 Alma Road, Wandsworth SW18 1AA

The Chutney first opened its doors in February 2005, to an immense reception; it quickly became an instant favourite for the local residents as well as others.

It has been sitting confidently at the heart of Wandsworth and it brings in a much-needed touch of classic Indian taste.

One look at the blood red designer chairs, bright walls and pale wood floor of The Chutney says it all: smart, modern restaurant with character.

At the Chutney, the emphasis has and will always be to provide authentic Indian cuisine without the use of artificial colourings or ingredients.

Restaurant Review: Grand Trunk Road -

Review analysis
food   ambience

Established by Rajesh Suri, whose accomplishments include heading up Mayfair’s Michelin-starred Tamarind and launching Zaika, The Grand Trunk Road is an unexpected East London ode to the East.

This was followed by the Delhi Ki Chaa, which was composed of delicate wheat crisps on a chickpea salad with sweet yoghurt and chutneys.

Moving on to my favourite dish, the Lucknow Ki Nihari is a slow-cooked lamb shank in a light aromatic sauce, nodding to the eighteenth-century spice route.

Reflecting on Grand Trunk Road and its unexpected location, it seems inevitable that as London’s outer boroughs give way to gentrification, restaurants will respond to meet the tastes of newcomers.

Whilst it might be hasty to predict a Hakassan in Hainault anytime soon, time will ultimately tell if Grand Trunk Road is at the vanguard of a new type of suburban culinary offer.

Chutney Mary is a fine dining Indian restaurant in London, founded in 1990 by Ranjit Mathrani & Namita Panjabi through their restaurant company whose current name is MW Eat.

Chutney Mary pioneered in redefining the public face of Indian cuisines by showcasing the gourmet foods from 6-7 different regions of India at any one time.

Chutney Mary was probably the first Indian restaurant in the world to trace the regional provenance of each dish.

Chutney Mary was also pioneered as an Indian restaurant in taking wines seriously, and led the way in the pairing of Indian food and wine.

In its new location the late AA Gill gave it the maximum of 5 Stars in his Sunday Times review with the concluding words "…if there is a better pan-Indian restaurant in London than Chutney Mary, I haven't eaten in it" Chutney Mary received the Square Meal Lifestyle BMW Best New Restaurant Award.

Sommelier Debbie Henriques provides inventive wine pairings for each dish.

The menu takes influences from across India; many of the dishes have familiar sounding names such as tandoori or tikka, however the cooking and presentation have been ramped up a level.

From the starters menu the Goat cutlet and yellow peas was like posh comfort food.

Another winner was the paneer kebab which had been ingeniously stuffed with chickpea masala and sundried tomato before grilling.

Particular highlights were a light unoaked Garnacha paired with the goat cutlet and a chilled Gruner Veltliner served with the Corn chaat golgappa.
