Contenders have been named for this year's British Kebab Awards, with 16 categories up for grabs by Just East.

Kebab houses from every corner of the UK will battle it out for gongs including chef of the year, best delivery and best fine dining.

The UK’s first kebab shop, Istanbul Restaurant in Soho, opened during the Second World War - there are pictures of it in the Imperial War Museum.

However it was not until 1966 that the famous doner kebab - cooked on a vertical spit - first appeared with the opening of the Hodja Nasreddin Kebab House by Çetin Bukey and Kojay Hüsey in in north London’s Newington Green.

A Bishop’s Stortford restaurant has been named one of the best in the country at the British Kebab Awards.

The British Kebab Awards are decided by a public vote and the Stortford restaurant beat competition from Rakki Rakkas in Nottingham to claim the award.

Speaking after receiving the award last night, Pircio's owner Mehmet Kabayel said he was “surprised” at having won the award and had not even realised that their customers had nominated them at first.

“We just started here in Bishop’s Stortford in June 2016, we have a restaurant in London which we have run for the last ten years, they have already won the award in 2014 but coming out here to Bishop’s Stortford and being entirely new to this place it was a surprise to win.”

The British Kebab Awards were set up six years ago to recognise the dedication of local kebab takeaways and restaurant owners around the country.
