The Holly Bush Pub Hampstead Review - Sunny in London

Everyone in this North London area knows this traditional 18th century wood panelled pub, yet it’s hidden down a small street which is at the top of a steep hill.

I first visited The Holly Bush pub in 2013 when Mr. Sunny and I attended a leaving drink for one of his colleagues.

When Mr Sunny and I received an invitation to review a Fuller’s Kitchen and we realised The Holly Bush was an option, it was just a matter of picking a date we were both off before we booked our table.

Mr. Sunny spent no time sampling the beer, as you can see by his half empty glass above.

We’d be eager to visit the Holly Bush pub again for a dinner, or any other Fuller’s Kitchen for that matter.

The Holly Bush in Hampstead dates back to around 1650 so on entering it's like stepping back in time.

Modern British cuisine is combined with traditional pub grub and an excellent range of real ales to compliment the food.

This old-school 18th century pub, which stands at the top Holly Mount, is a great option for drinkers in NW3.

The Holly Bush’s handsome, but cosy front rooms - complete with an open fire - are comfortable places to enjoy one of the ten tap options, five cask ales, or one of the many spirits from the well-stocked bar.

Move through to the dining rooms at the back of the pub and upstairs, and you’ll find welcoming spaces to enjoy a hearty menu of pub favourites and good seafood options.

If you’re feeling brave and can bag yourself a seat, the small outside space at the front of the pub is a nice space to take in a summer’s evening too.

Negotiate the steep steps from Heath Street up to isolated, cobbled Holly Mount to this house built in the 1790s by portrait painter George Romney.

It was later taken over by Benskins, a Watford brewery, in 1928, and much more recently by Fuller’s.

Three low-ceilinged bar areas carry a lived-in feel, the one bar counter purveying pints of Fuller’s ESB, Seafarers and London Pride, as well as Harveys Sussex Best, Leffe, Beck’s and Blue Moon.

Pimm’s and lemonade is a summer treat, as is a spot out front; consult the chalked-up weather forecast should you be pondering another steep climb the next day, perhaps to work off the smartened-up gastropub cooking.
