Winston Churchill set the tone on 15 July with a speech to the New Members’ Group at the Criterion Restaurant in London.

The Criterion Restaurant's front may still be regarded as the best surviving work of Thomas Verity, a leading theatre architect of his day.

As originally completed, however, the first two storeys of the central face contained a great round-arched opening forming the deeply recessed entrance to the restaurant.

Under the ownership of Georgian entrepreneur Irakli Sopromadze, in July 2009 Marina O'Loughlin reviewed the restaurant for Metro, saying that "The Criterion is the star of the show" citing that under the new ownership the food was "infinitely better than the food we endured during Marco Pierre White's reign".

The Criterion won the "Best London Restaurant 2011" award having been voted in at first place by the dining community.

ES Food Newsletter Savini at the Criterion is a great clashing of titans: in Milan, Savini is the grande dame by the Duomo, host to the likes of Verdi, Puccini, Hemingway, Sinatra and Charlie Chaplin.

Instead, they serve indulgent Italian fare as upscale dining: starters include a millefeuille of foie gras and candied lemon, given body with pan brioche and bite from balsamic vinegar, aged parma ham with pan brioche and homemade pear compote; or, fresh options from the sea, including grilled scallops with yellow pepper cream, anchovies, broccoli and salmon roe.

Keep it simple: the simpler dishes are Savini's strong suit There are handfuls of pasta dishes, some fancy (fresh ravioli stuffed with lobster and chopped tomatoes, potatoes and olives, with fried cardoons and hollandaise sauce with tarragon), some simple (spaghetti with tomato and fresh basil).

Something sweet Puddings stay true to the Italian heritage: Tiramisu, Orange flambéed crepes, a board of Italian cheeses, pear and chocolate tart.

Meal for two, including drinks and service: £200 The Criterion on London’s Piccadilly Circus is a space in search of a decent restaurant.

At the end of the meal, as I stared back down the long, sparsely populated dining room, the thrum of Kind of Blue echoing off the marble – they play it on a loop – I didn’t feel angry about the outbreaks of clumsy cooking or the ludicrous prices.

The idea of a classic bit of Milan, here on this site in London, doing classic Italian things, is very attractive indeed.

Savini’s take on osso bucco, served in the traditional manner with risotto Milanese, should be the one by which the rest of London’s Italian restaurants benchmark themselves.

■ And so the go-to place in London for comforting but classy Italian food which will punish the wallet but do the thing remains Sartoria, with Francesco Mazzei at the stoves.

If you’ve never poked your head around the door of the 133-year-old Criterion restaurant, what are you waiting for?

In recent years the Criterion’s owners have struggled to make this cavernous, eye-grabbing dining room pay: its latest incarnation is as the London outpost of Savini, a supremely upscale Milanese restaurant.

The veal Milanese (£29) was a whopping slab of crisp and tasty meat, while the pasta of the day (£28.95) – ‘woven’ intrecci with white prawns and scallops – was a highlight.

The trouble is, Savini boasts extravagant prices but no atmosphere.

Originally opened in 1874 this lavish venue has been serving afternoon tea to the cream of London society for over a hundred years.

Savini at Criterion Afternoon Tea Review I visited on a rainy Saturday afternoon and the interior of this place is stunning.

For tea connoisseurs this will be a real welcome touch as its always disappointing to have a wonderful first cup and further cups to be stewed.
