Hawksmoor Air Street | Restaurants in Piccadilly Circus, London

Review analysis
food   drinks   value

London's best steakhouse chain branches out to surf 'n' turf with this Mayfair outpost that mixes luxury seafood with top-quality meat.

The original Hawksmoor restaurants – Spitalfields, City, Covent Garden – are among London’s best steakhouses.

This fourth location, with its entrance on Air Street at the Piccadilly Circus tip of Mayfair, is the company’s first attempt at an upscale seafood restaurant – and it’s got it right first time.

Good quality meat’s not cheap, and neither is good seafood.

A signature dish of ‘Hawksmoor cut’ turbot is, like its finer cuts of beef, priced by weight – in this case £12 per 100g.

Jinjuu Mayfair | Restaurants in Mayfair, London

food

Mayfair’s new Korean fusion restaurant Jinjuu gets so much right – perfect service with no vulgar upselling; a sophisticated leather, dark wood and gold aesthetic; super-soft lighting – that its niggling flaws are all the more disappointing.

One winner is the tuna tartare – light, fresh, with perfect wasabi heat and lotus root crisps.

A broccoli and mushroom salad might not sound very exciting, but it was robust and satisfying with great spice levels.

Still, Jinjuu is a great little spot for stellar cocktails and pre-dinner nibbles.

Lalibela | Restaurants in Kentish Town, London

Lalibela charms from the moment you cross the threshold and smell the coffee beans roasting by the bar.

The smiling and attentive manager is keen to recommend dishes and explain how they can be served (on a very fine circle of injera).

Unlike most Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurants, Lalibela doesn’t offer sharing platters, but the menu is long and there are plenty of adventurous house specials.

Tofu spinach tibs (tibs are sautéed dishes) was deliciously savoury, if very oily.

It was a hot and steamy night, so we eschewed the coffee ceremony in favour of a couple of cold St George beers (from Ethiopia).

Terrace Grill and Bar | Restaurants in Mayfair, London

But the pretty patisserie and artwork aren't the only ocular titillation - the terrace setting offers some cracking views out across Piccadilly.

There's a British slant to the food menu, with dishes ranging from a terrine of wood pigeon served with duck liver, pancetta with quince, radish purée and grilled bread to Cornish lemon sole, Scottish hand-dived scallops and a signature dish of slow-braised Blythburgh free-range pork belly.

Expect classic G&Ts alongside signature creations and a range of 'old time favourites'.

Keep an eye out, too, for pop up events and concepts - set to take place in the conservatory and the outside terrace.
