Mac and Wild Thing, Our Tastebuds Are Singing, Fitzrovia A Scottish restaurant in the heart of Fitzrovia without a deep-fried Mars Bar or Tam O'Shanter in sight.

Mac and Wild is a Scottish game restaurant in Fitzrovia where provenance is crucial.

A full Scottish Breakfast (£12) and the Scooby-Snack, a floury bap stuffed with black pudding, bacon, fried egg, caramelised onions a tatty scone and Lorne sausage (£8).

I couldn’t resist a pair of venison and beef patties, stuffed into a brioche bun, topped with cheese and candied bacon, caramelised onions, razor-thin pickles, lettuce and béarnaise sauce.

The Big Mac and Wild had two beef patties, their signature sauce, pickles, onions and iceberg lettuce, stuffed in a seeded brioche bun.

When I first heard about Scottish game restaurant Mac & Wild, I initially dismissed the cuisine as not for me.

Mac & Wild initially started out as a street food stall, bringing Scottish culinary exports to Londoners, before opening a pop-up, and today has two permanent restaurants in the West End and City.

Having noticed the iconic orange can on our table, I knew I had to try to the Irn Bru Daiquiri as my apéritif when I saw the cocktail menu.

When it comes to mains, Mac & Wild are famous for their haggis, venison and their award-winning Veni-Moo burger.

Mac & Wild’s extensive drinks menu features a wide range of wines, Scottish beers and ales and over 50 whiskies.

Upon entry we were told they did not have a booking for us despite paying over £300 up front in order to secure the Christmas menu, which included service charge.

We were eventually seated after two members of staff got involved and checked the system properly.

Ordering ahead would lead you to believe your courses would come in good time but we were kept waiting for our starters and served pre mixed cocktails (as told by a member of staff later in the evening) The black pudding scotch egg was good and the venison chateaubriand was tasty (albeit with a £5 surcharge) but all courses were poorly presented, the signature burger was a huge let down after hearing people wax lyrical about it and the Christmas turkey was two dry turkey steaks a minimal trimmings.

An insult to Christmas.

All in all the night was a farce and the restaurant is either not able to work correctly with designmynight or their Christmas menu was a scam or both!

screams NYC cool (where they originated from), from the full stop in its name to its determination to call itself ‘plant-based’ instead of just plain vegan.

But aside from that, there’s more than enough to draw in animal-loving punters - from its super central Covent Garden location to its vegan mac and cheese and quinoa taco salad.

There’s something of a lack of good Scottish restaurants in London – while  for me, Boisdale represents a serious side to Scottish cuisine, Mac & Wild has a far more flippant approach – albeit with excellent produce, sourced from the homeland!

My colleague helpfully ordered the starter I felt I should have chosen – the Mac & Wild Scotch Egg, which appeared beautifully cooked with a nicely runny yolk and with a crisp outer shell hiding the well-seasoned venison, black pudding and haggis coating.

The list at Mac & Wild is not long, but quite well formed with a good selection of wines by the glass at a reasonable price (and the pour is generous!)

In the case of Mac & Wild, it’s a no brainer as the venison comes largely from their own family supplier, Ardgay Game, a consortium from the North East of Scotland.

Although the provenance of much of the food is well traced on the Mac & Wild menu – the breed, farm, farmer and butcher of the beef is also listed.

ES Food Newsletter It is hard for me, even as the seasoned professional that I am, to give new Scottish restaurant Mac Wild an impartial review, because, well, I really love Scotland.

It’s a Scottish game restaurant.

Mac Wild has kept itself on a pretty short leash, menu and décor-wise.

The walls are titivated with scenes of the wild stags that have nobly ended up on your plate in a collection of images from field to plate; a sort of photo-story guide to hunting and gutting a stag.

A brunch dish and unlimited brunch cocktails at a four-star Fitzrovia restaurant.

Snap it up at the Liverpool Street branch, too.According to the rave four-star review from our Food & Drink team, ‘the Scandi-leaning Scottish food served here… is mostly sensational’.

Especially when they put together awesome offers like this one, with unlimited prosecco or brunch cocktails (think bloody marys, bloody Scotsmans, bloody botanists, buckie royales) alongside dishes like a full Scottish breakfast, a toasted candied-bacon sandwich or a ‘dirty’ Scottish breakfast bun – a floury bap stuffed to the gills with black pudding, bacon, a fried hen’s egg, caramelised onions, a tattie scone and Lorne sausage.
