Myung Ga: Me and my bibimbap. [review] | London Eater

There’s appetisers, traditional specials, BBQ (very good) , rice & noodles (I think) and so goes the list.

The highlight of a Korean meal (for me at least) is the BBQ hot plate which sits in the middle of the table, where one’s order of meat or seafood is cooked in front of you.

The rice was alittle bland, the pot did not impart the signature sizzlingly bibimbups are famous for, and there were hardly any crunchy rice bits, it was a little too ‘wet’ and I really should have opted for more chilli paste because flavour was severely lacking.

A little dissapointing really, its the first time the bibimbup has managed to disappoint me, but there really wasn’t much to write home about; this dish was far too bland.

This little gem has an extensive menu of Korean and Japanese dishes – far too many to try in one sitting.

As for the mains, the Korean barbecue dishes come sizzling on a hot plate ready to wrap in lettuce and eat in irresistible bite-size mouthfuls.

They also serve sushi, sashimi and other signature Japanese dishes.

All the above is, of course, complimented perfectly by one of the ice-cold Asian beers or, for the more adventurous, a glass of Korean plum wine.

The food at Dotori is actually excellent.

I didn’t find the food enough to compensate for the poor (and actually rude) service at the time, so my initial review wasn’t great and I was not a fan.

The tempura (above, and below in the bento) is yum, but I do find myself feeling a bit sickly after having so much fried things.

Dotori is a restaurant that’s 50% Japanese and 50% Korean I mainly am a sucker for all the Jap options though.

I found my second act with Dotori filled with redemption, the food is fantastic and it’s worth clawing your way in for a table.

Now you can find Korean restaurants scattered across London, serving everything from modern fusion to traditional hotpots, and from ornate soju cocktails to sticky deep-fried chicken wings.

Prices are low and the food's staggeringly good — with two (very long) separate menus of Korean and Japanese food it seems unlikely they're doing both of those well, but we challenge you to find a miss among all the hits.

There's usually a queue outside but zero sense of hustle to the service once you're seated, and though the menu's good across the board, the stand-outs are the On the Bun dishes — the spicy pork or bulgogi beef are perfectly sticky, the buns they're wrapped in, perfectly soft.

They're all about the rapid turnover at this Soho restaurant, so it's not a place for a drawn-out dinner — but it's hard to beat for a lunch break hit of KFC (Korean Fried Chicken).

This Woburn Place fast food joint specialises in Korean fried chicken, beer and bao, as well as K-Pop, with big screens playing the hits in the main restaurant, and a karaoke room in the back where you can belt one out yourself.

There are waves of excitement are rippling over north London this week following news that the Korean restaurant Dotori is about to reopen.

The closure was made even more mysterious by the fact it followed a lengthy period of refurbishment, including refitting the basement to accommodate more diners, which were never in short supply.

Then, not long ago, an announcement went up on the restaurant's website announcing a reopening date, so the wait will soon be over.

Some of the reasonably priced dishes that diners will be glad to see again include Dotori’s sizzling dolsot bibimbap, a traditional Korean rice dish served in a piping hot stone bowl, flavoured with gochujang bean paste, as well as their pajeon seafood pancake, kimchi and marinaded beef bulgogi.

Dotori reopens on 7 March 2017 (we think) at 3 Stroud Green Rd, London N4 2DQ.

The dining room – like the menu – blends Korean and Japanese influences; there’s a Shinto lantern by the door, and Hangul calligraphy and Korean masks on the walls.

The Japanese side of the menu offers sushi, sashimi, tempura and donburi dishes.
