The Greek Larder, restaurant review: Amid the bleakest architecture ...
food drinks desserts
I'll never forget how, in full view of the Parthenon, the streets filled not with civil unrest but with men and women who defied warnings of blood to savour fresh dollops of tzatziki in the sun.
It is also an early contender for Dish of the Year 2015: a medley of salty, stringy, succulent melted cheese with sweet, rich and nutty accompaniments.
The slow-cooked chickpeas with tzatziki are a sloppy riot of garlic-infused Mediterranean goodness, healthy if dear at £6; and for the more adventurous there are masterfully crafted lamb tongues with oregano potatoes and htipiti (red pepper and feta spread (£6), and rabbit with parsnip skordalia – a kind of potato and garlic purée (also £6).

£60 for two, without wine Four more foodie notes from the past week Lunched with the High Commissioner of India; a spicy, baked fillet was the highlight of a perfect meal.
Restaurant Of The Week : Suvlaki In Soho
food staff menu ambience desserts
Launched in 2015, the Athenian grill is a bright addition to Soho’s bustling foodie district and brings the best authentic Greek street food to the table, in the classiest of ways.
Transporting the well-known street food favourite, suvlaki, to Soho, leading Greek chef and TV personality Elias Mamalakis has worked his modern magic to present a traditional menu that reaps the tastes of Greek cuisine in a merging of old and new flavours that’s popular amongst its diners.
Delectable options such as pork with tzatziki, chicken thighs with lemon mustard, wild boar sausage and Chios island Mastelo cheese frequent Suvlaki’s menu.
For those who still haven’t made up their minds (it happens to the best of us), Suvlaki’s burgers mixed with minced beef, pork and lamb make a great choice, packed with flavour and all garnished with fresh Greek salad.
Bringing exceptional and affordable Greek street food to the table in a sharp, contemporary setting that transports you straight to the winding cobbled streets of Greece and that can only be a good thing, surely.

Greek street food restaurant the Athenian has opened in London’s Belgravia at Grosvenor’s Elizabeth Street development.
The Athenian will serve Greek street food snacks, salads and meze dishes such as souvlaki, halloumi, pittas and dips using ingredients from small independent producers in both Greece and the UK.
Directors Efthymios Vasilakis and Neofytos Christodoulou founded the Athenian in 2014 as a street food stall.
Joanna Lea, retail director, Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, said: “Elizabeth Street is in a prime location to be able to provide an attractive offer for Londoners, and new independent brands like the Athenian will help to drive this vision further.”
Josh Leon, head of restaurants at Colliers International said: “This part of Belgravia continues to be in the spotlight and is set to make food and fashion headlines all through next year.

Trendy stall in Elephant and Castle’s equivalent of Boxpark, selling Greek souvlakia.
And thanks to this new Greek mini-chain, you can now snaffle them up like you’re holidaying in Athens.
The stall in Elephant and Castle’s answer to Boxpark – yes, there is such a thing, get over it – has a clean white-tiled interior peppered with Greek paraphernalia (bunches of Hellenic mountain herbs sitting in containers, forks in tin cans strewn with Greek writing).
Wraps are made with the vastly superior Greek rather than Cypriot pitta (circular rather than oval, fluffy rather than unleavened) and come with a sprinkling of oregano-flecked chips inside, plus a choice of tzatziki, tyrokafteri (spicy feta dip) or creamy souvlaki sauce.
At that price, even members of the Greek government could afford lunch there.
