Valentina Fine Foods, Shad Thames - Foodepedia

Tom finds enjoyment, but not excitement, at the confidently named Valentina Fine Foods… “Our offices are based in the trendy area of Shoreditch, East London.”

It did, however, mean that the first part of London I truly got to know was the area around Tower Bridge and the bottom of Brick Lane.

I have long since changed job and now rarely find myself in that area and so I was really quite pleased to be invited along to Valentina Fine Foods recently, one of a group of seven deli/restaurants, tucked away on Shad Thames just south of Tower Bridge.

Friday night is not a time for reading, and so instead of exploring the wine list we asked the waitress for a fresh, light bottle of white.

Desserts of chocolate Fondente and Panna Cotta along with a few shots of Limoncello rounded off the meal nicely, if not a little stereotypically, and with that, and a friendly goodbye from the ever-attentive staff, we stumbled off back to the bright lights of Tower Bridge.

Valentina Fine Foods bought out of administration with closure of ...

Insolvency firm Begbies Traynor appointed joint administrators to the Italian delicatessen and restaurant group on 17 October.

But company was immediately purchased by rival deli Gazzano and Son, which has a site in Clerkenwell.

Valentina is left with three London sites in Battersea, Putney and East Sheen, as well as one in Weybridge.

The Italian Zoccola family founded Valentina in 1991 as a ‘one stop shop’ for Italian produce in London, and it grew to eight sites in the capital and Surrey.

Begbies Traynor told BigHospitality in a statement: “Gary Shankland and Louise Baxter of Begbies Traynor were appointed as joint administrators of Valentina Fine Foods & Wine Limited on 17 October 2017.

An Italian restaurant based in Reigate has permanently closed, with the team in charge stating it is because the “eating industry has changed”.

A notice on the Valentina website confirmed its Reigate branch has closed and states customers with loyalty card points can still spend them at its other restaurants.

“Our other sites are doing really well and Reigate is a bit far out from the other restaurants which are located in south London so the management decided closing Valentina in Reigate was for the good of the company.

Councillor Rosemary Absalon, who represents Reigate Central, believes the restaurant's downfall was its location.

She said: “I suspect it could be a victim of being the only restaurant on the south side of Church Street.

Valentina Fine Foods Shad Thames: restaurant review - olive ...

A really sweet, family-run restaurant off the cobbled streets of Shad Thames, just a short walk from Tower Bridge, serving traditional Italian food in a roomy, modern space.

Mains are Italian restaurant classics such as fiorentina pizza, linguine with lobster and cherry tomatoes or calf’s liver fried with onion and white wine.

The mains of meat look brilliant, but next time I’ll order a couple of sharing plates: the restaurant’s strength derives from Valentina’s deli offering, so I’ll be taking the chance to order salumi, olives or parmigiano reggiano chunks with a glass of wine.

They have an assaggi d’Italia sharing menu that includes 6 starters – mixed meats from the deli counter, primavera, arancini and calamari followed by a main to share.

The extensive Italian wine list, separated into regions, is really impressive – with notes about each region, you’ll spend more time looking at it than at the menu.
