Vietnamese Street Food | Banh Banh

We are a small independent Vietnamese restaurant run by five siblings.

Half our tables are bookable by clicking on the reservations tab, the other half and bar area are for walk ins.

We are a fairly small restaurant therefore we ask that buggies and prams must be folded before and placed by the bar.

Where To Eat And Drink In... Peckham | Londonist

Petitou remains a popular and pretty spot in the Bellenden area, famous for its no-nonsense breakfasts and large plates of fluffy scrambled eggs.

From one station to another — there's a branch of Blackbird Bakery to be found near Queen's Road Peckham with the usual coffee and cakes.

Tucked away off the main road is Yada's Kurdish restaurant, a charming, ramshackle space serving Kurdish delicacies, such as kubba (crispy, meat filled rice cases), kebabs and pickles.

Over the road is local Italian Artusi, with its emphasis on fresh pasta and quality ingredient sourcing — a modern contrast to the much loved but more homely style of Il Giardino down by the station — a charming, family-run spot which locals adore because it's a little like sitting in someone's living room.

The Hope is proving popular, packed with drinkers supping craft beers and hoovering toasted sandwiches, while The White Horse has been serving Peckham since the 1800s and is now run by the same people who run The Montpellier.

Banh Banh's just completed a successful residency in the Bussey Building, but they're not stopping there.

She put together her own cookbook from her time as a chef in Saigon in the 40s and its those dishes that they're bringing to Banh Banh.

On that menu, expect Pho and Banh Mis during the day and sharing dishes in the evening with a weekly changing menu.

Their signature dish is Banh Khot - small turmeric and coconut mini pancakes with prawns.

And to wash that all down, there are with cocktails and local craft beers.

London is certainly not lacking in Vietnamese eateries these days, but during the Vietnamese street-food revival of recent years quite a few trendy new restaurants have focused more on design and aesthetics than authentic and delicious food.

Thankfully for the food-spoilt folks of Peckham they have one ticking both boxes with Banh Banh Vietnamese.

Peckham Rye is a competitive area for new restaurants, but Banh Banh Vietnamese seems set up for long-term popularity because nowhere else in the area can match its stylish but casual setting, funky vibe and simple but truly exceptional food.

Banh Banh Vietnamese is run by five born-and-bred Peckham siblings guided by the hand-written recipes passed down from their Vietnamese grandmother, a chef in Saigon during the 1940s.

Banh Banh dish up time-tested Vietnamese favourites like pho, papaya salad and beef in betel leaves, all of which can stand alongside the best in London.

Fear of not finding Peckham Rye means they are there early and, beguiled by the food being delivered to other tables, have started ordering.

Gossamer rice paper skins bulge with lettuce strips, vermicelli noodles, shredded vegetables and, as they put it, paddy herbs plus the prawns we choose (we could have had tofu).

Smart snackish options include spring rolls, sticky chicken wings — poultry supplied by Flock + Herd, the excellent butcher’s shop in Bellenden Road — and ground beef in stimulating betel leaves served on steamed vermicelli to be dragged through nuoc cham dipping sauce to delectable effect.

From Classics bun noodle (rice vermicelli) salad with vegetables, pickles, peanuts and spring rolls accompanied by either char-grilled pork patties or crisp tofu and mushrooms is a fine and crunchy backing group for the melody of the meal.

In this month’s Lucky Peach magazine David Chang, founder of the Momofuko restaurant group, remarks “if anything is going to kill ramen, it’s pho”.

For me, waving farewell to the East End left a hole in my heart the size and shape of Kingsland Road’s many Vietnamese restaurants, which as you can imagine is a fair burden on the old circulatory system.

For rent-hike refugees who’ve ended up in Peckham, though, things are looking up, as former Bussey Building regulars Banh Banh have just joined the burgeoning food village at the tip of Peckham Rye.

As well as the classic Vietnamese dishes you’d expect, (summer rolls, pho, noodle salad) there are plenty that you may not, such as the house special banh khot pancakes – gob-sized eggy hemispheres filled with juicy prawns and topped with spring onion, served still-cooking in a cast-iron skillet, with leaves and dipping sauce on the side.

Dishes may be designed for sharing, but most of the larger options will do the trick on their own, making Banh Banh just as great an option for a quick solo lunch as it is a communal blow-out with mates.

Should you opt for the latter, here’s my advice – gather up a few dyed-in-the-wool Hackney types, order one of everything and watch their faces as they clash chopsticks over some of the best Vietnamese food in the city.
