We were invited to dine at his recently opened restaurant Theo’s Simple Italian at the Hotel Indigo® London Kensington.

The menu at Theo’s Simple Italian is delivered by attentive and friendly staff that put you at ease and make you feel at home.

Theo’s Simple Italian highlights the rustic and fresh flavours of Italian cooking bringing locally crafted produce to life.

Head Chef William Leoni and his brigade work closely alongside Theo as Culinary Director to celebrate the best of casual dining Italian-style using top quality ingredients, perfectly balanced flavour combinations and above all classic, simple and authentic Italian dishes.

My dining companion tucked in to a plate of Agnello al forno – slow cooked lamb shoulder with olives, rosemary, white wine, sweet celeriac, carrot and spinach that was full of the authentic flavours of Theo’s beloved Italian cuisine.

REVIEW: Theo's Simple Italian, Barkston Gardens, Earl's Court ...

Because that’s real Italian food and that’s why I’m so happy Mr Randall has opened up Theo’s Simple Italian in Earl’s Court.

As its name suggests, this is Simple Italian food – but done well.

The pastry could have been slightly less coloured in all honestly, but it was still a really lovely way to end our meal.

When I first heard about the opening of Theo’s Simple Italian I expected it to be a bit lacking, but for no real or valid reason.

Instead we ended up having one of the best simple Italian meals of our year and given it’s such a short walk from our front door, we’ll most certainly be frequenting this restaurant for many years to come.

The Resident checks out Theo’s Simple Italian, Theo Randall’s latest easy dining option What do you look for in a great local restaurant?

Easy access from your home of course, but also a great menu and friendly staff so you’ll return time and time again.

In two spacious rooms at the Hotel Indigo in Barkston Gardens renowned chef Theo Randall has created Theo’s Simple Italian, a friendly neighbourhood restaurant that really works.

Theo’s Simple Italian is the sort of place you can go for a blow-out three-course dinner with friends or simply a plate of pasta and a glass of wine by yourself; there are no rules or expectations here and it’s casual dining at its very best.

Cleverly, most of the menu is offered in different portion sizes so you can choose what you want, depending on how hungry you are.

Theo Randall’s excellent food, served in a stylish and more wallet-friendly setting than at the Intercontinental.

The food: The concept here is that dishes are simpler and more everyday than the complex fine dining of Randall’s other restaurant, and at a more accessible price.

As usual, this means that the antipasti and cicchetti are some of the outstanding features of the meal; burrata and tomatoes is as sumptuous as it sounds, but Theo’s bruschetta makes this tired old warhorse feel fresh, just as the calamari fritti tastes delicious.

Kids options: Randall has now designed a children's menu – a three-course affair so kids can feel 'grown up' when dining alongside their foodie parents.

The meal is finished in true Italian style with vanilla gelato served with strawberries and raspberries.

Meal for two, including drinks and service: £110 Lunch at Theo’s Simple Italian is like my eyesight in middle age: it fails slowly.

A decade ago, he opened his own restaurant in a windowless room at the InterContinental Hotel on London’s Hyde Park Corner.

I’m not convinced, because everything here is them: the good snacks, the lacklustre fish stew, the forgotten zucchini fritti, and the apparent attempt to tap us down twice for the tip.

■ Cucina Asellina, on London’s Strand, describes itself as a New York Italian, and there is something to that, especially in the big flavours, from the deep-fried olives stuffed with veal and parmesan through to platters of well-chosen charcuterie and cheeses (asellina.com).

■ First came news that New York chef Marcus Samuelsson is to open a London outpost of his restaurant the Red Rooster.
