Vindaloo Vic

This restaurant used to be called the Kensington Tandoori, although I never went there when it had that name.

As well as a new name, the place has had a makeover and there’s a new chef.

A pungent and aromatic dish made with garlic, onions turmeric, garam masala, an intense rapid stir fried curry over high heat Balti is more a style of cooking than one particular curry.

The word balti can be translated as "bucket" and some say the style of cooking is specific to an area of northern Pakistan known as Baltistan.

Since its arrival in the 1970s the Balti has found home in Birmingham, England.

There's a new Indian restaurant coming to Kensington - all inspired by British Raj India.

With that inspiration in mind, they have dishes that include Ajwani Jingha (Tandoori style jumbo prawns) a dish that originated in Jaipur, and Achari Hiran, a venison dish created in Bhopal.

Drinks-wise, there will be lots of Gin Style cocktails (using Jodhpur Gin) and the owner and manager Salim Sheikh has opened his personal wine cellar for use in the restaurant - so expect some special wines too.

Raj of Kensington will open at 1 Abingdon Road, London W8 6AH on 15 March 2016.

They have a soft launch with 50% off food from 15-24 MArch, just mention that offer when booking.

A traditional Indian restaurant devoted to the 18th century cuisine of the British Raj.

But I guess that’s on purpose, since the reasonably priced dishes take their cue from the 18th century, when regional cuisine was influenced by the colonial rule of the British Empire (aka the British Raj).

The saag bhaji was another incredible dish, lightly salted and rich from onions and peppers.

It’s just a shame the batakh chettinad (pan-seared duck breast) was a letdown.

For a main that looked the business and smelled divine, that duck didn’t stand a chance; it was way too tough.

A restaurant and wine bar tucked away amongst the townhouses, villas and mews of Kensington.

It's a relatively versatile space, with booth seating, a bar and a separate restaurant giving its clientele - usually the well-heeled locals - the kind of flexibility to which they are accustomed.

The modern-European menu ranges from parmesan soufflé with quince, alfalfa and a walnut and chicory salad to North Sea cod served with olive oil mash, Swiss chard, samphire, balsamic fig, pomegranate and purple kale.

There are no beers on tap but a good range available by the bottle.

A varied wine list takes in the old world and new, with organic and biodynamic bottles available alongside a few on offer by the glass.
