Inside Balans Soho Society on Kensington High Street the serving staff are all in check shirts and jeans; I’ve even spotted a couple of beards.

Contemporary, upbeat places to eat on Kensington High Street are in short supply.

So when I accepted an invitation to try the new Balans Soho Society right here on my doorstep it was with high hopes.

Kensington High Street is the second in the group to undergo a revamp.

I enquire further into the changes taken place in its transition from Balans to the new, Balans Soho Society, and it seems it has gone from a sort of American diner serving pancakes and burgers and Heinz to a more foodie-focused affair with careful sourcing of ingredients, proper cocktails (see above), moody lighting and something altogether more in line with London dining as we know it (except on Kensington High Street).

As you step over the threshold of the newly revamped Balans Soho Society, you’re simultaneously struck by the size of the place and by the comfort it exudes from every angle.

Balans Soho Society is of course a haven for the the cocktail lover.

This is something that goes under appreciated in establishments such as Balans Soho Society – tip your bartenders people, they take care of you.

Make sure you don’t skip past the decadent Shellfish Cow – Balans Soho Society’s take on the surf and turf – and the utterly divine roast hake with chorizo white bean and tomato stew.

Balans Soho Society belongs at the heart of Soho, and continues to be a superb addition to the fabric of the city.

Stepping into their High Street Kensington branch you can see the work that has gone into the beautiful interior.

We opted for the halloumi with olive mash main (£10); thrice cooked chicken (£6); chicken gyoza (£7); calamari with aioli (£7); kale with chilli and ginger (£3.50); and plump juicy olives.

The kale which was ginger-y and had a nice heat to it, it also added a beautiful green element to our choices!

A caramelised tart au citron with raspberries and raspberry sauce; and a chocolate cake with cherry ice cream (both £6).

The chocolate cake was a good strong cake (it might have blown us out of the water with a melt in the middle?!)

The dish was supposed to come on English muffins, with poached eggs and lobster.

When the dish came out; it turned out to be two tiny hard eggs on a burger bun, with no lobster.

When this was pointed out to the waitress, she went to check with the ‘chef’, and came back with the comment that we (table of 8) were wrong and that these were a brioche buns.

No mention of the lobster and egg complaint, she then went on to get her manager.

For a dish that expensive I expect some sort of understanding when a customer asks why the eggs were cold, there was no lobster and on burger buns.

Well-to-do west London respectability meets Soho’s louche debauchery in the heart of High Street Kensington.

Relaxed, spontaneous, sociable dining is very much the order of the day at Balans, whatever the time of day.

Whether it’s for a brief encounter at breakfast, a meandering weekend brunch, a light lunch or a candlelit dalliance over dinner, Balans Soho Society extends the most cordial of invitations to whet the appetite or wet the whistle, whatever your pleasure.

At Balans Soho Society there is nothing taken more seriously – the correct temperature of every drink and the warmth of every welcome, aside – than the quality of the food.

Bohemian, gregarious, sophisticated and perhaps just a touch eccentric - a place to abandon your plans - Balans is the quintessential Soho experience.
