Port House

Opened first in 2006 we realised we had something special in our little cave on South William Street in Dublin 2!

Twelve months later, we opened another little cave in Temple Bar and our third in a cottage in Dundrum Town Centre's Pembrook District.

London Restaurant review: The Port House | Metro News

Restaurant review: They get some things right at The Port House, a new branch of the Dublin-based tapas bar chain.

‘Gintonic’ is served in a balloon glass in the Spanish manner at the handsome wood-panelled bar and there’s an extensive list of ports and interesting Spanish and Portuguese wines, although surprisingly just four sherries.

But until the kitchen is sorted, The Port House will lag far behind in London’s fiercely contested tapas market.

A meal for two, including wine, water and service costs about £75.

Spanish tapas had always been a firm favourite of Lee’s and off he went to consult with a good friend of his in the Basque region of Spain, returning with the ultimate tapas menu for Dublin.

Not only seeking to offer the most authentic Spanish Tapas outside of Spain, but also to provide the finest wines, ports and sherries from the Iberian Peninsula.

In 2007, Lee and Oliver decided that Dublin needed another unique tapas bar and found another premises in Temple Bar, Bar Pintxo.

This idyllic restaurant is formed from two small cottages with a stunning outdoor terrace, perfect for lunch or dinner after a shopping trip or purely to be transported to Spain on a summer’s day!

Just like all Port Houses, their stunning wine, port and sherries are sourced from only the finest wineries in Spain and Portugal as well as offering the full range of authentic tapas that has become a firm favourite in Dublin.

With its wine cellar atmosphere, attractive tapas menu and friendly Spanish/Irish staff, The Port House on the Strand is a cosy place to while away a winter's evening.

Just two doors from the Adelphi, it's a new Irish-owned joint that reflects the current zeitgeist for all things Spanish.

The food, served in dinky tapas portions, can be a bit hit and miss though. The Spanish tortilla, though well seasoned, was overcooked, the mushroom croquetas bland and heavy, but we liked the lemony, salty whitebait, the garlic-laden pa amb tomaquet (Catalonia's answer to tomato bruschetta) and the crisply moreish churros with chocolate sauce.

Drinks are a forte.

Wines (affordable and largely Spanish) are listed with maps and there's a good selection of gins, sherries and ports.
