Old Shades in Whitehall, London Pub Review and Details
food
The Old Shades is in middle one of a trio of Whitehall pubs (practically in a row) but you'll find this one is a better bet than the other two - it actually shows a bit of character.
Nevertheless, if you're in the area, the Old Shades is one of the better Whitehall pubs.
The Old Shades - Whitehall - Grapes Design
The Grade II listed house takes its name from “Shades” meaning a wine vault with a drinking bar shaded by a covered arcade or below ground.
The challenge was to work closely with the planners to maximum the existing space by carefully stripping back the interior fabricate to its former glory yet adding a show stopping bar, rear display & bespoke brass & nickel light fittings.
Hand-made victorian tiling were reinstated within the main dining room, decorative floor tiles formed a new apron which surround the central bar with its moulded pewter bar top.

This pub shows some character and allure; in real Victorian style, it is an excellent architectonic match to its surroundings.
Towards the rear of the pub are panels of decorative glass which provide some necessary daylight.
The pub is often not hectic and easier to get a seat.
The staff are attentive; the beer is cold and the food good.
The highlights: an excellent selection of steaks and some very good wines.

Then, once two and a half weeks had passed, I wrote a list of my favourite pubs I can walk to from Charing Cross (which since the early 19th century has been regarded as the “centre of London,” and is now the point used to measure distances from London).
The Old Shades has recently re-opened so it’s Old Shades, new style with a change in management the pub features a characterful bar (where I have personally given advice on the layout of the spirits), dining area and a range of quality British ales.
The Shades serves a varied menu of the nation’s much-loved pub classics and light bites, but my top tip is to try the burger as they are great.
When it comes to food though, there are several menus which have some unusual choices such as British Tapas of which the obvious choices for me are their black pudding Scotch egg with piccalilli and this may be the only place in London you can get all year round pigs in blankets.
You would think Oxford Street would be packed with pubs, an ideal place for the husband to wait while his wife shops?
