For ‘The Ayes’, they make “a great local addition” providing “great British food in a buzzy setting” (“I keep expecting to be disappointed, and I’m not!”)

For ‘The Nays’, “hugely underwhelming food” and “uneven” standards generally make it “feel like they are trying to milk the franchise, but are destroying it in the process”.

The most popular is the “ladies-who-lunch” favourite on the King’s Road, whose “garden is to die for” (although “it’s an uphill struggle actually being seated in it”) – a “super, bustling and tastefully decorated venue with fabulous people watching opportunities” (and where the Top Tip is “its great breakfast: it’s much quieter so service is spot on!)”

It has an all-star cast – The Ivy Market Grill is an offshoot of possibly the most famous restaurant in Britain.

It's been nearly 10 years since (fashion) Baron Caring bought the Caprice Holdings group of restaurants, which then included The Ivy, Le Caprice and J Sheekey.

By opening a swish members' club directly above his theatreland favourite, Caring disastrously split the traditional Ivy crowd.

Martin Brudnizki Studios, also responsible for the Ivy Club, are past masters at creating the illusion that new restaurants have been around for ever.

I may have come to boo, but by the end of lunch, I'm ready to cheer; the Market Grill isn't just an Ivy diffusion line, it's a really good restaurant in its own right.

It took far too long for The Ivy to copulate with new areas of London and give life to offshoots like Kensington Brasserie and the stunning Chelsea Garden.

The Market Grill in Covent Garden is similarly good looking, with lots of marbled leather touches, a bar begging to be propped up, and a decent smattering of suits and couples sipping whiskey cocktails in well cut tumblers.

And for Covent Garden, thanks to the expert operation at the door, you can barely see who the out of towners are.

Order drinks by the glass, so perhaps a red with the mains and an Old Fashioned in place of dessert.

Leave before you fall off the bar stool and then walk over the cobbles of Covent Garden till you find a suitable corner to kiss in.

Now, the new Ivy Market Grill joins Holborn Dining Room, Strand Dining Rooms, the ace Zedel, and Heddon Street Kitchen (reviewed here) in ploughing a not-so-lonely furrow that was popularized by The Wolseley in 2003.

The baked meringue with vanilla cream and clementine jam is particularly enticing, without being too sweet; a plate of Keen's Cheddar with granny smith apples and crisp breads is pretty good, too.

Where the Ivy feels clubby and exclusive, Ivy Market Grill is more democratic, the kind of place you might find the populist politician Nigel Farage at the next table, though not White Van Man from the recent Rochester by-election.

The low prices can free up funds for good wines such as the Chardonnay, Morgan ‘Double L Vineyard’, California 2012, at 90 pounds.

Ivy Market Grill is at 1 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2E 8PS.

A sister venue to The Ivy, this new Covent Garden restaurant is located on the piazza.

Afternoon teas are available as well as an all-day menu.

The interior’s lovely, in a classy, bourgeois brasserie, my-family-own-Dorset sort of way.

Yet we liked Market Grill, and its please-all approach; it serves breakfast, afternoon tea and all-day snacks, and has a good children’s menu.

We’ll return for the late opening, striking good looks and dialled-in service.

The illustrious portfolio of Caprice Holdings continues to swell with the addition of The Ivy Market Grill in Covent Garden.

In many ways the convivial all-day café and eaterie plays ‘little sister’ to the infamous Ivy restaurant just around the corner, but it has nevertheless firmly established it’s own personality.

It’s all topped off by an impressive pewter bar, offering a creative selection of cocktails made with the restaurant’s very own gin and champagne.
