Starting a new trend, Shoryu Ramen - meaning 'rising of fortunes' - was the first traditional Ramen bar to open in London.

Launched in 2012 and owned by the Japan Centre's CEO Tak Tokumine, Shoryu Ramen has three London sites located in Regent Street, Soho and Kingly Court, as well as Shoryu Go, a dedicated tonkotsu ramen take-out bar on Air Street.

Specialising in the traditional Hakata tonkotsu Ramen, the pork-based thick white soup provides Londoners with a new take on Japanese food - the hearty dish is built around a strong stock and also includes meat, egg, noodles and a whole lot of flavour.

Diners can choose between Piri Piri, Wasabi, an intriguingly named, Dracula Tonkotsu and many others.

Further options include fishcakes, dumplings, sashimi and miso as well as Japanese staples such as 'Shoryu Buns' - fluffy, steamed buns similar to the now well known hirata buns.

It looked great – cloudy thick white miso stock vibrant from the chiu chow chilli oil, fried mince pork (rather than barbecue pork in most of the others), lemon and garlic.

While I’m the first to appreciate fire in my food, this love wanes when the heat is at the expense of any other flavour: the character from the mushrooms, bean sprouts, spring onion and ginger were suppressed to whimpers, the nitamago egg was lost in the chilli, the nori may as well have been absent, and the pork was at least visually present if little else.

Fire and ice tsukemen had ramen sitting on ice topped with hot smoked salmon, some pork and the halved egg, served with a side bowl of warm wasabi-tonkotsu dipping sauce.

On paper the side of shoryu genki don flirted with its enticing list of components: rice, bbq pork, mentaiko caviar, onsen tamago (first sampled not long ago at Luiz Hara’s excellent Japanese supper club), pickles and seaweed.

Liked lots: crushed garlic cloves on tap Liked less: seated on small stools; nowhere to hang bulky coats; the ‘lost order’; too much chilli oil in broth;  Good for: dinner if you’re an Asian student as most of the clientèle seemed to be

Shoryu Ramen, Regent Street – a big bowl of aromatic, soupy noodles is nothing more comforting and homely for the belly of a Chinese Malaysian person like myself.

With the warming food and heating in Shoryu Ramen, I am sweating like in summer days.

hokkaido curry ramen GBP 10.90 – not the kind of curry I expected it to be but the flavour has a subtlety of chinese herbs, seasoned well and is a generous portion!

matcha azuki roll cake GBP 4.00 dorayaki GBP 4.00 – Doraemon – the Japanese cartoon!

In hope that Shoryu Ramen does not cloud the restaurant front with all those numerous window-sticker-recognitions!

Shoryu Regent Street holds a special place in our hearts being our first restaurant location dishing out hot bowls of ramen to both Londoners and tourists alike, since 2012.

From the team behind Japan Centre, Shoryu Ramen launched in November 2012 and has been recommended in the Michelin Guide 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Shoryu Ramen specialises in Hakata tonkotsu ramen from the Hakata district of Fukuoka city on the southern island of Kyushu, Japan.

Our Hakata tonkotsu ramen recipe has been specially created by our Executive Chef Kanji Furukawa who was born and raised in Hakata, to provide the UK with highly crafted, genuine tonkotsu rarely found outside Japan.

Shoryu's owner Tak Tokumine is also a native of Fukuoka city and along with Kanji is dedicated to championing his hometown’s local speciality.
