Leicester Square Kitchen brings small Peruvian and Mexican sharing plates to the West End.

Leicester Square Kitchen deviates from its sister venues May Fair Kitchen and Monmouth Kitchen by offering a menu packed with South and Central American treats.

The menu consists of small plates designed for sharing, offering dishes like tiger prawn soft tacos with spicy papaya habanero salsa and robata-grilled Pisco-glazed smoked paprika ribs and lime.

Desserts are equally appetising, boasting bowls filled with dashes of coconut, lime, guava and mango.

The cocktail menu follows the theme of the food, with a list packed with Mexican and Peruvian mixed drinks like Aztec Negroni with Maestro Dobel Humito (silver smoked tequila) and bitters, or Chilli and Lychee Margarita, featuring Ilegal Joven mezcal, Kwai Feh lychee liquer and green chilli.

In a nutshell: Mexican and Peruvian small plates at The Radisson Blu Edwardian’s new restaurant Summing it all up: Tiger prawn tacos, Mayan-spiced chicken ensalada and Robata-grilled Pisco-glazed smoked paprika ribs with lime are some of the sharing plates up for grabs at the new Leicester Square Kitchen, a new restaurant in a Leicester Square hotel.

If you’ve ever emerged from one of Leicester Square’s many cinemas dazed, hungry and after something with a bit of a kick, then the Leicester Square Kitchen might be just the ticket.

It’s the new Mexican/Peruvian sister restaurant to May Fair Kitchen, and Monmouth Kitchen (both well reviewed as Peruvian restaurants.)

and can be found inside Leicester Square’s Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel.

Until recently, Leicester Square’s only redeeming assets were the Heliot at The Hippodrome Casino’s reasonably-priced steaks, or Burger King’s magical soft drinks dispenser – spilling various drinks we know and love but in outlandish, unfamiliar flavours.

On the edge of the Radisson Blu Edwardian Hampshire Hotel, Leicester Square Kitchen is the third restaurant from the group behind Monmouth Kitchen and May Fair Kitchen (sic).

Instead, Leicester Square Kitchen offers a fairly extensive menu split into a selection of contemporary Mexican and Peruvian-inspired dishes served in a bright, clean space.

A soft taco filled with Mayan spice-marinated chicken also harbours a tantalising mélange of huge flavours: “cilantro” (coriander on this side of the Atlantic, thanks), black lime and garlic are all prevalent on the tongue, though the cayenne pepper mayonnaise is somewhat lacklustre.

A fine new addition to the (oddly) iconic central London landmark, lunch at Leicester Square Kitchen isn’t perfect, but the flavours extracted with most dishes from the Latin American menu showcase a real flourish of promise that towers over nearby competition from the likes of TGI Fridays, Garfunkel’s, Bella Italia, et al.

Leicester Square proper, as opposed to the neighbourhood, can be a bit overwhelmed by tourists hunting down cheap theatre tickets, though sharp-eyed gourmands may have spotted that the hotel Radisson Blu Edwardian Hampshire on the south side of the square is showing off a stylish new eatery.

The hotel’s creative director Rob Steul departs from the building’s imposing façade of red brick and Bath stone with a restaurant interior of subway tiles, white terrazzo floor, and black-legged dining tables; the monochromatic palette is pepped with sudden flashes of caramel leather upholstery, De La Espada butterfly chairs, zinc-topped tables, glass bricked wall, and light oak.

An outdoor terrace, meanwhile, is lined with Kartell furniture and shaded with black and white stripped awnings, though with the English weather being so fickle, it makes sense to stay put inside, close to the kitchen headed by Neil Armstrong, Matthew Downes and Preet Tandi.

Despite the restaurant’s particularly pucker name, the MO is a blend of Peruvian and Mexican flavours, here presented as sharing plates – among them hard tacos enfolding chilli-lemon scented chicken, grilled chorizo, and tostadas with shredded crab and ginger mayonnaise.
