Kulu Kulu Sushi

Sushi restaurants

At Kulu Kulu you sit around a conveyer belt and wait for your food to come to you.

It’s reasonably healthy, quick and tasty Japanese faire, with a selection of sushi, sashimi and a few pleasant surprises.

The Venue About 30 diners sit around a conveyer belt where small plates of going round and round which you pick up yourself, thus dispensing with bad service for good.

There’s barely even a menu – not that it’s needed when the dishes goes round and round and you can just pick up what you fancy.

Bearing in mind there’s no time lapse for your to come to your table and bring you your food, this is ample time to exhaust the selection of dishes going around the belt.

Oliver Maki had been on my go-to list for the longest time, especially after seeing the most amazing matcha dessert on Instagram.

The sushi in Oliver Maki is a mix of classic and new, they have dishes such as an anchovy wrapped sushi roll or the red nori (which I assume is beetroot) wrapped sushi.

The star of the show was definitely the Oliver Maki signature Sushi Jewels.

Oliver Maki was such a great experience, the sushis were unique and bursting with flavour.

Although a little pricey than other sushi restaurants, Oliver Maki is worth visiting even just for the desserts!

Kulu Kulu Sushi's Covent Garden branch in Shelton Street (details below) looks, if anything, even more unremarkable from the street than the South Kensington branch does, but we can vouch that the sushi is just as good, and the atmosphere similarly causal and laid back.

Kulu Kulu Sushi has three branches: 39 Thurloe Place, South Kensington, London, SW7 2HP Telephone: 020 7589 2225 Nearest tube: South Kensington Opening times: Open for Lunch & Dinner.

Closed on Sundays & Bank holidays Child friendliness rating: 3/5 Take-aways available No disabled toilets Date last visited: 18th May 2011 (The review above is for Kulu Kulu Sushi's South Kensington branch.)

76 Brewer Street, Piccadilly Circus, London, W1F 9TX Telephone: 020 7734 7316 Nearest tube: Piccadilly Circus Take-aways available 51-53 Shelton Street, London, WC2H 9HE Telephone: 020 7240 5687 Nearest tube: Covent Garden Take-aways available It doesn't look anything special from the street - in fact you could pass by without giving it a second glance - but it serves good, reasonably priced sushi in a casual and absolutely unpretentious environment (you don't go for the atmosphere or dcor...).

Go to Kulu Kulu Sushi instead! The fun thing is that Kulu Kulu Sushi is a kaiten sushi - that is, the sushi travels along a conveyor belt loop past the diners, who sit at a horseshoe-shaped counter while the sushi chefs slice and form the sushi in a central preparation area, right under the eyes of the diners.

Their sushi is delicious. The main concern of the restaurantis the sushi - not the decor, not the service.

You feel that all your money goes to the essential: the food. You are seated at a bar, and the plates with different declicous kinds of sushi go bye and you choose.

There are many kinds of sushi and they are served on six kinds of plates, which indicate the price of the dish. You may need to wait a bit until you get a set.

Repeated visits in recent months have shown that this longstanding branch (there's one in Knightsbridge and another in Soho) is one of London's best low-priced outlets for Japanese small dishes.

Cooked dishes, epecially anything deep-fried, are superlative when freshly made; a good reason to sit near the beginning of the conveyor belt on the right-hand side of the restaurant.

Better still is to get dishes made to order – the staff are normally very obliging about this.

Don't go if you want to linger at length, or if ambiance matters: no kaiten sushi (conveyor belt) is right for those occasions.

But if you want high quality, and the chance for a quick in-and-out, you can't do much better than this wonderful place.
