At the NPG, Company of Cooks was awarded a five-year contract worth £20 million — and at the start of the year the restaurant closed for a month for refurbishment, relaunching just before Valentine’s Day with a special menu for the night at £70 per head.

The new caterers are developing a calendar of family events, the next up being a Mothering Sunday lunch on March 15 (“family-style roasts”), and are also offering meals inventively related to exhibitions (currently Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose, a colour-themed John Singer Sargent Afternoon Tea, £35 including a ticket to the show).

Not up to sratch: roast cod with grilled pickled and pureed cauliflower at The Portrait Restaurant The Sunday lunch menu, £27.50 for two courses, £32.50 for three, offers six choices per course.

More stunning views can now be had from the Shard, better value eating in viewless restaurants nearby, but Portrait is aiming at an overall experience, hitting the visitor attraction market with slightly disheartening accuracy.

Food & drink review: Portrait Restaurant, London | Life and style ...

food

The National Portrait Gallery's in-house restaurant, open for lunch and tea, plus dinner on Thursday and Friday, has had a recent makeover - though you would be forgiven for not noticing as the captivating views across the rooftops towards parliament dominate the space.

Care has been taken with the ingredients, so a fig and stilton salad is invigorating, though pairings aren't always successful - the delicate, sweet flavour of scallops was overwhelmed by a cauliflower sauce.

A main of plaice with marsh samphire that was a touch bland, especially given the £18 price tag.

Desserts, especially a vanilla souffle with raspberry sauce, are commendable and there's a carefully-chosen wine list.

Overall, the standard of food doesn't quite match up to the prices, but, with the view, it's worth it.

The views of Trafalgar Square are the main draw at this restaurant - and that’s after you’ve made your way past many of the arty mugshots in the National Portrait Gallery, located downstairs.

The vista - a rooftop-skimming cityscape three floors up - takes in Nelson’s Column, Whitehall, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

Portrait isn’t somewhere that relies completely on its location.

The food now comes courtesy of Company of Cooks - a catering firm with some form at other London cultural institutions, including the Royal Opera House and the Southbank Centre.

We also liked the rigatoni with a porcini and tomato ragu, and both desserts - one a treacle tart with preserved lemon and clotted cream, the other an espresso chocolate tart rich enough to consider patronage downstairs.

The National Portrait gallery's rooftop restaurant boasts spectacular views over London, and has established itself as one of the capital's most sought after dining areas, set 92 feet above ground level on the Gallery's third floor.

Diners can enjoy an unparalleled vista of Nelson in Trafalgar Square and across Whitehall to the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and the Coca-Cola London Eye.
