Condesa is a tapas bar opening on Maiden Lane later this month from the people behind Barrio in Battersea.

They say they're offering a young, sexy take on the classic tapas bar.

In practice, that means they'll have a mixture of various Latin dishes on the menu - bread with chipotle alioli starts at £3, there's daily-changing ceviche for between £5-£7, spicy Mexican tostadas, and jamon Iberico.

So expect mackerel chipotle tostada, Pibil pulled pork sliders (£5) and Chorizo Iberico quesadilla.

And there's a selection of Spanish and and Latin American wines, beers, sherries and cavas to go with that.

There are two menus to choose from too, a day menu and a night menu, and Daniel told us that the bar was especially busy at night, as well as the end of the week and the in Covent Garden, London: Condesa – Tapas – Vino – Café Daniel told us that ‘Condesa’ is both the name of a “hip” district in Mexico city as well as being the Spanish word for ‘countess’, which brings together the flavour fusions of Mexico and Spain for his Bohemian style tapas bar which provides a truly authentic and intimate setting.

One thing that struck both of us was Daniel’s passion for the food he carefully sources; and the word sourcing came up all the way through our discussion over lunch, and we both thought that’s what made the food so special, as well as freshly made to order dishes and the in Covent Garden, London: Condesa – Tapas – Vino – Café The first of many platters arrived just after being served our drinks – we were treated to a Tuna Ceviche with a Tostada; it was simply divine – fresh tuna was mixed with coriander (cilantro), chillies, limes and red onions; the tuna was perfectly “cooked” and was soft and packed full of zingy citrus and herbal flavours with just a hint of heat.

A mixed cheese board with fig jam, membrillo, walnuts, Manchego, Mahon and Valdeon Ximéne sweet sherry A mixed cheese board with fig jam, membrillo, walnuts, Manchego, Mahon and Valdeon cheeses Daniel offered us a coffee, Condesa serves excellent coffees, made with the very best Hasbean coffee which is a blended from Nicaragua, Colombia and Guatemala beans, and as well as coffee we also served a glass of Patrón, a Mexican coffee liqueur that boozy, rich, rounded and quite delicious.

With thanks to Daniel, Sonia and Kaska at Condesa for making us feel so welcome and thanks to Edwina for inviting me to review in Covent Garden, London: Condesa – Tapas – Vino – Café Note: Restaurant owner Daniel Caballero left Mexico in 1998 to be inspired by flavours around the world.

It’s always a good sign when the waitress insists you start your night with a sherry.

This little tapas joint off Covent Garden has dark wooden tables for two opposite the bar, and larger tables lining the wall at the back.

The menu is small but varied.

Pick up citrusy pulled pork quesadillas or spicy chicken chipotle bocadillo sandwiches for lunch, or come for dinner specials that change weekly and, of course, a glass of sherry.

Condesa takes its tapas inspiration from across Spain and Latin America, so you might find unexpected dishes on the menu, such as the little pan of grilled provolone cheese – a typical Argentinian tapa.

The narrow tapas restaurant was buzzing with people chatting loudly at stools along the bar, and large iberico hams hanging behind it.

The menu offers a fusion of classic Spanish tapas dishes (patatas bravas, tortilla, padron peppers) and Mexican (quesadillas, tacos).

We couldn’t resist the huevos rotos special – roast potatoes topped with a fried egg, manchego cheese and charcuteria.

The egg, although a little overdone, was rich against the crispy potatoes, and the cheese and bacon created a pleasant salty topping.

From my recent experience sampling olive oils on a Barcelona food tour, I could tell this was high-quality… not as strong as a picual oil, but rich in flavour all the same.
