The greengrocer grew to include a café, the café became a restaurant, and now there are over 60 branches of Bill's restaurants across the UK, from Exeter to Glasgow and most places in between, with 18 branches in London.

I was invited to the Covent Garden branch to try the new summer cocktail and food menu.

Our dinner at Bill's in Covent Garden was on a hot, hot night, and we were sitting at a long, cool table in the upstairs area near the kitchen.

We kicked things off with cocktails - a fruity and refreshing raspberry and rosehip collins for me - rosehip gin, raspberry and pink grapefruit cordial, lemon, Bill's pink lemonade and fresh raspberries; and the bramble mojito for the boy, made with white rum, blackberry puree, mint and lime.

This one was the Bill's Pink Spritz, and my favourite of the evening - a mixture of London dry gin, rhubarb cordial, cochi rossa (pink vermouth), pink grapefruit and Bill's pink lemonade.

He moved it to the High Street and a café was opened with a desire to make the place feel like home.My first experience at Bill’s (the branch in Richmond) wasn’t great – there was a mix up over who was meant to be serving us so service was rather slow and my companion’s vegetarian dish was rather bland.

So I thought I’d give it another go.Covent Garden in the school holidays when jam packed with tourists isn’t a comfortable place.

Bill’s is located right next to a Jamie’s Italian. The seats outside were sadly full but this did mean that there was plenty of space inside.

She choose the beer battered fish and chips (£11.95) which arrived on a platter on some paper with a small pot of mushy peas, tartar sauce and two large pickled onions.

The waitress was friendly and smiley but not so laid back that it affected the service. It certainly suits as a great place for a quick, inexpensive and wholesome lunch.

Bill's in Covent Garden is a colourful and exuberant eaterie in Covent Garden right next to the Lyceum Theatre.

Open from breakfast to bedtime, food is really celebrated at Bill's — from the delicous, seasonal, home-cooked food to the enthusiastic staff and the stacks of food produce to take home.

Breakfast ranges from healthy granola and porridge to the Full English Breakfast, and for lunch and dinner there's steaks, pies, ribs and curries.

Recently the Covent Garden branch has undergone a complete refurbishment creating a relaxed yet stylish setting to enjoy a menu offering classic favourites (fish and chips, steak, mac and cheese) and new dishes designed to please whatever the time of day.

Covent Garden is an area rich in its range of bars and restaurants, but arriving for a late lunch, I doubt that many would have been able to create the sense of comfortable dining we experienced in Bill’s tucked away in St Martin’s Courtyard.

Yes, Bill’s Cream Tea is offered from 15.00-17.00 featuring scones and jams and my personal favourite, toasted tea-cake (when did I last see that on a London menu?

Treating ourselves after a busy morning’s work my daughter and I relaxed with a classic Bloody Mary (deliciously spiced) and a Bramble Mojito (more-ishly fresh and fruity) whilst we awaited Halloumi Fries (a family favourite) and a portion of very yummy Beetroot and Goats cheese crispy rice balls (with purple basil and pine nut pesto) Whilst my daughter launched into the classic Bill’s Hamburger (everything a burger should be: big, juicy, with spiced mayo served in a good bun) served with Bill’s tomato chutney and rosemary salted chips, I ignored her comment that I should order the “Ancient Grain Bowl” (evidently it had my name on it…) but then looking at the contents of wild rice, buckwheat, toasted millet and black quinoa, avocado,  red peppers, green beans, roasted cherry tomato, charred broccoli,  mixed seeds, red pepper tapenade and purple pine nut pesto yoghurt, I thought it needed to be experienced so I took a small bowl along with grilled chicken skewers from the set menu.

Bill’s group of restaurants are currently rolling out their new menu and refurbished interiors.

"We love the improvements – it’s hard to make an old favourite even more special, but Bill’s have done just that".

Bill's gets a new look and evolved menu to further dial up the eclectic British style created by Bill’s founder Bill Collison The restaurants menu has been adapted and feature many dishes not currently available across the Bill’s estate.

From breakfast... We continue to offer a welcoming home from home serving Bill’s classic breakfast favourites alongside new dishes including an açai smoothie bowl and an apple & cinnamon waffle.

Bill’s classic egg dishes will be available until 5pm and lighter lunch options will be available at all restaurants.

The bar menu is packed with dips and nibbles and will be served alongside Bill’s existing popular house cocktails and drinks.
