This area is steeped in history, so perhaps it’s only fitting that one of its best restaurants has been around a while too… View full article This nest of three restaurants is hidden away close to Smithfield(as well as the café there is Cafe Rendezvous and Le Grenier Du Café) and they have been serving traditional French food to happy regulars since 1986.

Le Cafe Du Marche is three restaurants under one roof - Le Cafe, Le Grenier and Le Rendezvous.

Le Cafe is an elegent French restaurant on the ground floor, Le Grenier is a private upstairs dining space and the neighbouring Rendezvous has a more casual, brasserie feel to it.

In Le Cafe the three course fixed price a la carte menu changes every four weeks but you can expect meat and fish dishes du jour.

Hidden away down its own little alley, stumbling on this romantic restaurant is like discovering a well kept secret available only to those in the know.

You'll find Le Cafe and Le Grenier in Charterhouse Mews off Charterhouse Square, Le Rendezvous, meanwhile, is at 22 Charterhouse Square.

Tucked away down a cobbled mews in historic Smithfield, Le Café du Marché is an authentic and atmospheric French restaurant, run by the same family for over thirty years.

Our unique and characterful private dining room, Le Grenier ‘the attic’, is a perfect place for your wedding celebration.

For larger parties Le Grenier can be hired exclusively with our ground floor restaurant to accommodate 150 for dinner or 300 for a reception.

Le Café du Marché is convivial French restaurant serving authentic, provincial French cuisine which can be tailored for your event.

For desert choose from mousse au chocolat, seasonal fruit tart and classic French cheeses.

We booked it for a gentle birthday celebration with good friends.

The ambiance remains intimate and a little bit like being on holiday and the food was generally rather lovely but it wasn't as good as we remembered.

Secondly we had one vegetarian in our group and he had very little choice of dishes - although i had called beforehand and been assured vegetarians are well catered for.

The puddings were a bit of a mixed bag with not very well-defined flavours and over-complicated.

On the bright side the main courses were well-cooked and delicious - particularly the meat dishes and the wine was delicious - if a bit expensive.

Luxury Private Dining Rooms at Le Café du Marché

Le Café du Marché has two spaces available on weekday and Saturday evenings for wedding receptions, private parties and business functions.

Le Grenier, a light and airy loft space under the exposed wooden beams of the former Victorian warehouse, can cater for up to 60 people seated and 100 standing.

Le Grenier has its own self-contained kitchen, bar and bathroom facilities.

Le Rendezvous is our smaller dining room and brasserie on Charterhouse Street and caters for up to 35 seated and 60 standing.

The room also has its own kitchen, bar and bathroom facilities.

Poor old France: it had a hissy fit when the World’s 50 Best Restaurants über-listicle didn’t name a single French restaurant in its top 10.

But my recent chomps around the French countryside have been little short of painful: the Michelin-starred small-town joint whose tables featured intricate sugarwork sculptures of Smurfs – sorry, Schtroumpfs.

The bare brick walls with little by way of decoration bar vast glass bottles of preserved fruit; the single vintage clock, the wooden warehouse beams.

But, hey, those frîtes... I bang on about using old favourites or be in danger of losing them, but Café du Marché doesn’t need my hectoring: it’s constantly packed without being blogged to death or PR’ed to distraction.

We opted for soupe du jour (vegetable), and purple-sprouting broccoli with hollandaise for starters.

Entrecôte, for a main, came with roquefort-buttered spinach and crispy new spuds, while the swordfish daily special arrived with ratatouille.

Dishes were beautifully presented and near faultless – save for the rather stringy swordfish.

The wine list (almost exclusively French) provides a satisfying read for oenophiles.

Complimentary extras such as a large salad bowl with the mains and constantly refilled bread baskets reinforce the feeling of being well looked after.
