Dock Kitchen is a part of their moveable restaurant project which made its debut at The Dock exhibition for the London Design Festival.

At the entrance, we were greeted by the open The rest of the venue looks abit like a stripped down exhibition space with elemental aspects of bricks, metal and glass working oversized pumpkins as table decoration.

First dish: Dhal with tomatoes and curry leaves, mustard leaves and chappati bread (£6.5) Ah, I probably should mention that the menu reads like the chef’s greatest hits from around the world – kind of refreshing.

I was pulling bits of shell out from the crab – like the chef’s way of saying fresh produce, hand made, yeah.

The dish was very fragrant, a mellow spiciness – like the gastronomical equivalent of fresh laundry.

The venue was Counter Kitchen, a new café and restaurant in Clerkenwell that reflects the current trend for “Clean Eating”.

My guest, Dr Shady Labib, is an Egyptian health coach studying for an MSc at URL in London: “I used to be 35 kilos overweight... I tried all the diets.

As I survey the room, it’s evident that Counter Kitchen should buck the trend and turn a profit at this time of year.

At the counter, the friendly staff sell homemade granola and peanut butter or bags of apple and pineapple chips for £1.

The special on our visit was lamb meatballs with bulghar wheat, walnuts, shredded cabbage, runner beans and a tahini sauce (£8.50).

Deliciously Ella with her Mae “delis” (although she has now, in a slightly panicky way, distanced herself from the word “clean”); M Raw, “London’s first 100% gluten-free fine dining restaurant”; Vita Mojo, which promises to “put you in control of your diet”; the Detox Kitchen; Rawligion; and too many more.

But my main event is this glittering, plant-filled restaurant from Camilla Fayed, daughter of Mohammed Al, in west London, clean eating’s spiritual home.

In what’s something of a portent, ingredients are repeated all over the place: the frijoles, salsa, guacamole and “sour cream” (grouty stuff made from nuts) that feature in a plate of nachos also turn up in the Mexican bowl; ditto the meze – clunky, pasty sweet potato patties (“falafel”?

A vast, Instagram-worthy sundae, a “Berry Mess” of mostly blueberries, “cream” and “coconut nice cream” with, lurking in its depths, dusty shards of “maple meringue” (made of, I dunno, actual dust?)

Mornings at Counter Kitchen involve toast, and lots of it.

Offering homemade breads with both sweet and savoury toppings, the relatively small menu is actually pretty varied thanks to a quasi-pick-and-mix approach.

We ordered multigrain sourdough topped with smashed avocado, chilli flakes, poached egg and halloumi (flavours across the breakfast menu are broadly east Mediterranean).

The poached egg added a savoury depth that rounded off the flavours, but toasted sourdough’s tendency to become knife-bluntingly robust meant that combining all the elements was a little difficult at times.

Later in the day, the café promises interesting soups and hearty bowls of stews, curries and salads – all made fresh without artificial flavours, refined sugars, preservatives and other such trash – and if breakfast is anything to go by, they’ll be full of flavour, filling and pretty as a picture.
