This impressive new coffee shop is a great addition to Battersea Story Coffee recently opened on St John’s Hill in Battersea, a short walk from Clapham Junction station.

The cafe is welcoming, filled with beautiful but minimalist decor and great coffee.

They serve Square Mile’s Red Brick espresso blend which is popular in a number of venues in London, but Story’s flat white blew us away and stood out from any that we have had recently.

I asked a few questions as Ben took some photos of the space, they spoke excitedly about how busy it had been since opening in October and how surprised they had been about the positive reception they had received from the heavyweights in the coffee scene including Caffeine, Nude and London’s Best Coffee.

They were completely humble despite this attention, as they focus on their aim to bring great coffee to Battersea.

Owners Sof and Jo are some of loveliest people you’d hope to find managing a coffee shop.

Coffee and coffee shops alike are an institution, they have represented many things to people all around the world for centuries, and the couple wanted to be a part of that.

18 months before opening Story Coffee, the pair attended the London Design week in Clerkenwell and met an innovative British table designer whose work struck a chord immediately.

Two years down the line, the designer wasn’t just making the tables for Story Coffee, he was fitting out the entire shop.

I’ve got a lot of love for Sof, Jo and Story Coffee.

Price wise, Story is absolutely on par with most independent cafés around London: £2 for an espresso and £2.60 for a Flat White; serving a Flat White as 6oz standard.

Imagine most customers ordering a double espresso and reading the Guardian, that’s Story – I liked it!

While that’s enough discouragement to stop me going there to work, I’ve got to be honest and say it wouldn’t put me off choosing Story as a place to meet friends and drink good coffee.

Sure, there are no fancy Rude Health milk alternatives (which is usually the sign of a great café) but that’s just not what Story is about.

Story is simple, good coffee.

ES Lifestyle Newsletter Matcha tea is, to most people, just green tea.

But according to Jameel Lalani, founder of Lalani Co tea specialists: “there is matcha everywhere in Japan.

Lalani Co Matcha Gold (Picture: Lalani Co) Apart from your matcha, where else can I buy good stuff in London?

A hand made black matcha whisk by Sabun Kubo (Picture: Lalani Co) There are new methods using mini battery-powered whisks - but that's about as sophisticated as uncorking a fine Burgundy with a cordless drill.

Fine matcha will taste alive and fresh with a thick, green tea flavour and gentle umami.

are super friendly and the menu is varied with something for everyone, plus it’s all handmade on site!

Alex recommends: The menu changes daily but I normally opt for a seasonal salad or a hot fresh panini.
