Shibuya Soho

From ice cream to curry and sushi to sake, you name it, Shibuya Soho has got every Japanese culinary base covered.

Shibuya Soho Restaurant | Shaftesbury Avenue | Chinatown London

Shibuya Soho is a veritable Tardis of a restaurant.

By some kind of magic, the modest, two-floor space manages to be a café, bakery, bar, sushi joint, and ice cream parlour, all rolled into one.

But this isn’t a case of jack of all trades, master of none, Shibuya Soho are masters of all aspects of Japanese café cuisine.

Behind the counter are a tempting array of baked Japanese cake delights, like Matcha Roll Cake (a squishy sponge filled with a whipped green tea cream), or tempting Nama Cream Strawberry Cake.

There’s plenty for the savoury-of-palate at Shibuya Soho too, including classic sushi favourites like California and Maki Rolls, but also some super cool and unique varieties, like crunchy Caterpillar Roll with tempura flake, avocado and tuna, or a feisty Volcano Roll with tempura prawn, eel, wasabi mayo and spicy mayo sauce.

Japanese in name, but not fully in effort, this two-floor restaurant-cafe offers Japanese cooking, Korean desserts, sushi and ice-cream in a Scandinavian designed space.

Open from 12 to 10.30pm all days of the week, Shibuya Soho is proof that good things come in small packages.

Our two choices made were the green soba (could have been a ramen actually) and my main dish was the teriyaki chicken plate.

I reckon it was pretty good, but a place like Shibuya Soho sticks out for other reasons.

I did enjoy my time with Shibuya Soho, but mainly found that it played a little on the safe side.

Among the ample selection of Japanese classics were highs such as well-made nigiri sushi with pearlescent rice, fresh fish and a decent choice of toppings, including o-toro (the fattiest cut of tuna) and sweet, firm-fleshed surf clams.

From our vantage point on the mezzanine above the counter, we watched as staff poured milk into a gleaming silver gadget that transformed the liquid into tiny shards of ice.

Sweet, rich, nutty and refreshing, this alone is worth popping in for.

That sushi really is very good.

A handy place to know about when you’re in Chinatown but fancy something other than Chinese.
