Restaurant Review: Heliot Steak House - Good Things

Courtney Maggs-Jones tries steak that raises the stakes at Heliot Steak House You’d be forgiven for avoiding Leicester Square when in search of fine dining.

One of the major reasons to visit is The Heliot Steakhouse – which has already been voted Best Steakhouse in London through a number of awards.

Heliot is so named after Madame Claire Heliot, a flirtatious and alluring performer in the early 1900’s – famed for feeding raw meat to her fourteen lions on stage.

These included roasted bone marrow and fried duck egg, whilst chimichurri, blue cheese butter and porcini sauces were all excellent.

TIP: I’d highly recommend booking here pre or post-theatre (and whilst the special pre and post-theatre menus look lovely, you need to book for the full Heliot Steakhouse Menu to truly experience it).

Mid-way into my kilo’s of meat week we found ourselves at Heliot Steak House.

But the steak is what Heliot Steak House is really all about (clue is in the name).

A very strong start to our dessert choice and solid near-end to our meal was this beautifully presented almond mille-feuille with winter forest fruits and mascarpone cream.

Heliot Steak House was in all honestly nothing like I’d expected it to be.

If you want my advice then skip the squid, order the tatare, request the biggest steak on the menu (cooked medium-rare) and don’t miss out on dessert.

A steak house to bet on. Our review of Heliot Steak house.

I wouldn’t usually bet on USDA prime beef, in fact I’d usually bet against it; far too often I’ve bet using my heart hoping for a tasty steak rather than my head and the bet just hasn’t paid off.

There are two steak menus, the standard menu consisting of 28 day aged USDA prime steaks and a secondary menu with USDA prime steaks dry-aged for an additional 60-90 days.

Heliot steak house has single handily rehabilitated my perception of USDA prime beef.

If you are out for good USDA prime steak then Heliot steak house is a great bet.

It’s unique setting, excellent prices and its unusually tasty USDA steaks makes it a great steakhouse and a real challenger to Flat Iron for the best value steak in London.

We were invited to The Heliot Steak House in the Hippodrome Casino to sample some of their menu items and must admit that the meal challenged our preconceived notions about casino dining.

We had a chat to Simon Thomas, the Chairman and CEO of the Hippodrome and it was evident that his passion and striving for continual improvement has lent itself well to the Hippodrome’s re-vamp and the launch of the Heliot Steak House.

In an ode to Vegas dining, the supreme quality beef is subsidised by the casino making it far more reasonably priced than other quality steak houses in London.

The sides on the menu really contributed to giving Heliot that authentic steak house feel and they stood up well against other upmarket steakhouses in London.

In addition to the casino and Heliot, the Hippodrome also features private rooms for events, a speakeasy bar called Lola’s on the ground floor with burlesque dancers, and you can often find international sporting events on TV when other establishments are shut.

Heliot Steak House - London Brunch Review

Review analysis
food   menu

The Heliot Steak House, Bar & Lounge (a restaurant within the 24 hour Hippodrome Casino on Leicester Square) isn’t the most obvious place for a noteworthy brunch in Central London, but looking at their menu - perhaps it should be.

As their name suggests, Heliot Steak House are well known for their delicious hunks of meat, and as such they’ve applied that to their brunch menu too.

As well as the more standard Eggs Benedict and smashed avocado options, they also offer Full English steak plates (priced between £16 - £21), as well as slightly more adventurous dishes spanning Goat Cheese Lollipops (£7), Lobster Ravioli (£16) and most temptingly, a ‘Meat Mountain Pancake Stack’ (£14).

Made up of six pancakes, USDA prime steak strips, Cumberland sausages, streaky bacon and a duck egg - all topped with lashings of maple syrup so good it's tempting to smother yourself in the stuff - this is a big plate of food.

Casinos aren’t the first place that spring to mind when looking for brunch recommendations - especially 24 hour establishments in the heart of one of London’s busiest areas - but the Heliot Steak House, Bar & Lounge is a good shout if you’re after something a little different.

Burger Freakshake at Heliot Steak House Hippodrome Casino ...

We've had a burger with a pint of melted cheese and a burger pie but now the burger has been given its most gluttonous makeover yet.

The Heliot Steak House at Hippodrome Casino is piling patties on top of milkshakes to create the burger freakshake, not one but four times.

Costing £24, the experience includes four burgers and four shakes, from the USDA prime rib burger, topped with bacon and truffle sauce and paired with a vanilla shake, through to the lobster tale burger which comes with a passion fruit mix.

Be quick though, this epic meal is only available between 24th-27th August.

3 things to try when you’re there 28-day aged USDA prime steaks Millionaire’s Mac & Cheese Heliot’s Meat Mountain Stack – a sensational brunch favourite made up of six American style pancakes, a 200g USDA prime rump steak, six rashers of streaky bacon, two Cumberland sausages, a fried duck egg and lashings of maple syrup.

Heliot Steak House is an award-winning steak restaurant located inside The Hippodrome, in the heart of London’s West End.

Undoubtedly the highlight of the menu are the signature 28-day aged USDA prime steaks, which are available in nine different classic cuts including fillet and T-bone.

Each steak is aged for between four and six weeks to develop tenderness and flavour and diners can choose from a wide variety of traditional and innovative sauces, including blue cheese butter and spicy peanut butter, and toppings including roasted bone marrow and lobster tail, to complement.

For those looking for the ultimate in indulgence, Millionaire’s Mac & Cheese with a poached duck egg & black truffle will satisfy all cravings.

Restaurant Review – Heliot Steakhouse, Hippodrome Casino

value   food   ambience   menu

What’s genuinely most surprisingly about Heliot, nonetheless, is the often incredible value of the food served – especially when remembering the proximity to the rest of Leicester Square’s frankly catastrophic restaurants.

Alongside the main menu of mainly American-style dishes, there’s also a hot and cold mezze section, a 24-hour menu, weekend lunch and brunch, plus a pre-theatre menu at just £17.95 for three-courses.

Main courses include a perfunctory burger, as well as the likes of slow-cooked duck breast, various lobster dishes and a vegetarian “spring garden pie”.

The béarnaise is fine, yet it’s the porcini sauce with it’s dank earthiness that really lifts this dish, as well as the lusciously fatty bone marrow that compensates for the lack of fat on the fillet side of the T-bone.

But if, like mine, your gambling skills are laughable; you’ll find deep comfort in the value of the Americanised comfort food on offer at Heliot Steakhouse, at the very least; with absolutely no need to break the bank.

There's certainly a sense of West End glamour at this Leicester Square restaurant - it's at the Hippodrome Casino, once a byword for London's lustre.

Its restaurant, Heliot, offers a menu with more than a nod to Stateside steakhouses, with USDA cut, wings, ribs and seafood platters all on offer.

Pan fried salmon with English asparagus and sweet lemon, mushroom ravioli with parmesan sauce, and the Heliot fish and chips provide alternatives.

Keep an eye out for lunch menus, pre-theatre options and a '24 hour menu' with burgers, wraps, sliders, light bites and breakfast bits available around the clock.
