We have been many times in this excellent French restaurant next to Wandsworth Common (click here for the previous review done 8 May 2009).

I love scallops, and these were amongst the best I’ve had in a long time – so certainly memorable and excellent value.

Rabbit is an excellent meat (which I’ve had several times in this resturant) that makes a wonderful meal when as well cooked as it was here.

What is really nice about this restaurant is their flexibility and readiness to suggest dishes you may like.

The salmon was cooked to perfection – with a fantastically crispy skin and moist tender inside.

For this modest sum, we could choose for the starters between soup of the day (in this case, minestrone), a Norwegian prawn coktail, timbale of aubergines and mozarella in a tomato sauce with drops of pesto, and calamari rings sautéed in chilli garlic and olive oil and garnished with continental parsley.

For main courses, there was a choice between baked meat cannelloni in a tomato and béchamel sauce, risotto with mixed finely chopped vegetables finished with a drop of pesto sauce, pan fried piccata of chicken in white wine and lemon sauce, or grilled skewers of prawns on a bed of aromatized bread crumbs finished with a delicate parsley sauce.

We chose the calamari and the aubergines as starters, the cannelloni and chicken as mains, and caffé cream and chocolate trilogy cake as dessert.

The pan fried piccata of chicken in white wine and lemon sauce was also extremely good.

The baked meat cannelloni in a tomato and béchamel sauce was overall pretty good, served hot with a nice creamy tomato and béchamel sauce.

The spicy chicken on skewers came with a fairly plain salad, but it was still quite fresh and had a pleasant enough dressing.

The main course was sea bream topping garlic mashed potato.

The potato itself was perhaps just a little on the mushy side, though it’s flavour was good.

Dessert was the weakest dish, being a bit excessively sweet and a little overcooked.

Cost & conclusion: I was not the one paying the bill, but 3 courses for £7.90 is hard to complain about.

Drinks and food orders were taken, and then the wait began.

A basket of bread was not brought over to our table, and more incredibly our drinks orders were forgotten too.

Upon pointing this out (plus the absence of bread) to the waitress we were told that she would look into it, and eventually 5 minutes further on (by which time we had almost finished our starters) our drinks and bread arrived.

Whilst we were eating our mains it became apparent that Bistro1 had not given any thought to table layouts to accommodate the bookings that they had taken, hence one party were told that they needed to leave as they had overstayed (they still had unfinished drinks at the time) and other parties were moved around as the staff tried to rearrange tables to accommodate the bookings that they had taken.

or if there has been a change in ownership/management in the last year, but for the first time I genuinely couldn't wait to get out.
