Rude Health Porridge Championships

We had SO much fun attending the Rude Health Porridge Championships last week (wait, stay with us!)

However, this year’s winner of the Rude Health Porridge Championships is Native, who wowed the judges with their bowl of ‘Meadowsweet porridge with Kentish wood ants & crab apple compote’.

The porridge was topped with toasted almonds and pumpkin seeds, a homemade crab apple and fennel compote, wild fennel leaves and Kentish wood ants.

The winning recipe will be served at the Rude Health Cafe in Putney for the whole of November, with customers able to choose from a topping of ants or lemon-peel alternative.

Native’s Imogen and Ivan told the audience that they chose to include ants in the recipe as they wanted to include a locally sourced ingredient that would add some zest and sharpness to the creaminess of their porridge base, “Ants are not only a good source of sustainable protein but they are delicious too.”

Zala, a new Middle Eastern restaurant specialising in authentic meze, Levantine pizzas, pitas and grilled meats, is now open at The West Yard (near KERB Camden Market).

This good value offering kicks off aptly with a complimentary selection of regularly changing meze, including a roast cauliflower salad, bursting with flavour, fresh hummus, baba ganoush, tahini, sweet potato and parsley salad and a bag of moreish flatbread.

Mains includes skewers of grilled meats served on light, fluffy flatbreads and drizzled with traditional sauces such as Matcbucha (slow roasted tomato and pepper) and yoghurt.

Levantine cuisine wouldn’t be complete without pita, and at Zala, they come in various combinations including beef & lamb kebab, ‘Arayas’ grilled beef, prawn & roast cauliflower and sirloin steak & egg.

The end result: A mash up of the best loved Italian staple and the popular Turkish dish, ‘Lahmacun’, meaning ‘meat in bread’ in Arabic.

More specifically, we have to thank brothers-in-law, Tomer and Alon for opening up such a delightfully casual dining experience.

Service isn’t mentioned often enough in restaurant reviews, but Alon is one of the most welcoming hosts you will ever encounter.

Even though they do offer a vegetarian option of mozzarella and cherry tomato pizza with homemade matbucha (slow roasted tomato and pepper), Alon felt compelled to go above and beyond for my vegetarian guest, so that the pizza included pomegranate, rocket and aubergine.

Alon recommended that we tried some Israeli wines; the barkan classic malbec from Israel was punchy and paired well with the meat dishes and unsurprisingly was Alon’s personal favourite.

It’s a traditional, rose-scented milk pudding from Israel which is light and a great palate-cleansing before you leave your wonderful dining experience.
