It recently opened a new branch in Camden, just down the road from me, so I took my health-nut sister Charlotte to give it a whirl.

Charlotte went for the Rose Harissa Hummus and Smokey Baba Ganoush combo (£6.00) because an unquenchable appetite for Middle Eastern dip runs in the family.

The sticky sweet chili sauce probably cancelled out all my healthy intentions, but it didn’t matter anyway because we ended up sharing starters and I absolutely destroyed half of Charlotte’s dips, which were steeped in olive oil and served with fluffy pitta breads, warm from the oven.

Crispy sweet potato fries were £4.00 extra but came with small tureen of basil mayo and, refreshingly, heaped on the plate instead of presented in a miniature fryer, copper-plated watering can or other piece of absurd spud-serving paraphernalia.

Puddings are on the pricey side – £6.50 each – and neither Charlotte nor I have a sweet tooth, but we couldn’t resist a pair of gooey maraschino cherry truffles (£3.00).

After a visit to the Soho restaurant on Lexington street one lunch time with a colleague (which was lovely, but it was very small & very busy, and the food took a little longer than we hoped to arrive), I went to the Camden branch a few weeks later.

Both times I’ve been to the Camden branch I’ve chosen a pasta dish from the “daily specials” menu as a main and both times it honestly has been amazing.

The Vegan “strozapretti” (sort of similar shaped to fusilli) tasted really fresh & the pesto-style sauces are always flavoursome and interesting (the first time I had “mint pesto” and the second was a broccoli/basil/pine nut combo with chopped tomatoes on top) I’ve not got much experience with the full range of sides available, as both times I’ve opted for the Chargrilled Cauliflower, with tahini, lemon & pine nuts – because it was just so damn delicious.

The portion size is perfect and is particularly good chopped up and mixed in with the pasta… Presentation wise the dishes looked a little different on the two occasions I went (although to be fair, the second time I asked for the pomegranate seeds to be left off and an addition of basil mayo), but in this kind of place I think that’s fine – when the food is so tasty and fresh and the portion sizes are still the same, it doesn’t both me.

I hear at lunch time they also have a salad bar & they do takeaway, so if you’re local to any of the locations and fancy some fresh, healthy food, pop by – it’s very reasonably priced for the range of delicious stuff they have on offer!

S. and I got out at the right end of Jamestown Road in Camden, a vibrant street of modern restaurants and bars, and tried to work out where number nine could be.

Mildreds is no longer limited to a sliver of Soho, it’s loud and proud in Camden town.

Many who have eaten at Mildreds Soho know that the service can be somewhat hurried; on this opening night, the staff in Camden were all extremely attentive and accommodating and long may it continue.

For many years, Mildreds has done a wonderful job of giving vegetarians a place they can enjoy as well as somewhere to proudly take non-veggies, who in my experience soon lose all fear of a meatless menu.

Tom Dixon lights and Scandi-cool furniture: Mildred’s Camden.

Photo: SE It may date back to the late 1980s, but longstanding meat-swerving pioneer Mildred’s has only recently acquired a large and airy outpost in Camden Town.

The new branch is on Jamestown Road, in the former Camden Brasserie building, next to Wagamama, so it’s all natural light and big windows, with a winningly dog-friendly dining room and takeaway salad bar.

Super tempting (and super healthy to boot): Mildred’s lunchtime salad takeaway.

There are imaginative small plates and surprisingly filling smoked tofu burgers (tip: don’t order a side with those unless you’re starving as you probably won’t need one).
