Where to watch the boat race in Barnes, Putney, Hammersmith and ...

The Resident picks out some of the best between Putney and Mortlake… 1 Putney Bridge Just a few minutes walk from Putney Bridge tube station, Putney Bridge has great views of the two crews right from the very start of the race, up as far as the Fulham bend.

It’s been a hotspot of the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race for over a century, so if it ain’t broke… 8 Lower Richmond Road, Putney SW15 1JN; dukesheadputney.com 3 Star & Garter, Putney Also at the start line is The Star & Garter, an ideal spot if you want to watch the rowers warm up and cheer the teams as they set off.

Stevenage Road, Fulham SW6 6HH; fulhamfc.com 8 The Crabtree, Hammersmith Wedged between Putney and Hammersmith Bridge, The Crabtree is a pretty perfect spot to catch The Boat Race.

13 Lower Mall, Hammersmith W6 9DJ; blueanchorlondon.com 12 Old Ship W6, Hammersmith Always a popular spot for the Boat Race, the Old Ship W6 has excellent views of the race and there’s a good seasonal dining menu plus plenty of cask-conditioned beers and a good wine list so you won’t go hungry or thirsty with all that spectating!

16 Dukes Meadow A large park and recreation ground adjacent to the river between Chiswick Bridge and Barnes Bridge on the Middlesex bank, Dukes Meadow provides views of the final stage of the Race.

drinks

Sure, it’s probably still my favourite live venue in London, with a superb riverside location, cashpoint and supermarket next door, a warm atmosphere, inviting decor (OK, a bit gastro in the front bar, but still cosily rock’n’roll in the actual venue) and a great selection of bands.

But it has to be said that I’ve often found the staff, comprised as they most probably are of Twickenham and Roehampton Uni students trying to top up their grants with a bit of pocket money, a little on the surly side.

Nonetheless, the selection of beers on offer is more than pleasing, and the double special occasion of both remembering the departed Mr Parfitt and ringing in the incoming New Year meant I indulged in two or three festive doses of real ale, something they can usually be relied to keep in fine order.

I will say, however, that at the moment, the website details are a bit of a mess- though they promise they’re in the middle of revamping it, it’s extremely difficult to tell at the moment whether you’re emailing the office or the bar.

Which, naturally, also goes for their sister venue the Bulls Head (Barnes) Still, I know they’re currently “under new management”, as it were, so time will tell…

The Bulls Head - Barnes: Live Music

7 Star Arts Presents at Bulls Head Barnes, London on 21 Dec 2017

Classic Gershwin Revisited - The genius of George Gershwin in music and words (Presented by 7Star Arts): Back for the third time, by popular request!

Following a sell-out performance in July, 7 Star Arts’ most popular production is back at the Jazz Room for a special Christmas show.

The vibrant music of George Gershwin is interwoven with his fascinating life story from birth in the colourful, teeming New York of 1898 to his tragically early death in 1937.

Featuring Viv Mclean, international concert pianist and renowned Gershwin interpreter together with narrator, actress Susan Porrett, currently performing in the critically acclaimed in 'The Slaves of Solitude' at Hampstead Theatre, this is an intriguing, eclectic mix of Gershwin’s music from the much-loved ‘Rhapsody in Blue’, ‘I got Rhythm Variations’ and ‘Swanee’ to the rarely-played, classical Preludes.

“A glorious and intriguing celebration of Gershwin’s life and work” are just some of the audience reviews.
