The Marquess Tavern, Islington: Restaurant review

It’s one of Islington’s real hidden gems, but The Marquess Tavern deserves to be well-known thanks a seriously good approach to its food and drink Growing up, I was an incredibly fussy eater.

Sitting down and salivating over The Marquess Tavern’s menu, those memories have been invoked, particularly when it comes to their ‘from the grill’ menu that offers you a choice of a whole host of meat and fish, along with two sides and a butter or sauce of your choice.

Both dishes had a satisfyingly spicy kick to it: my chicken was delicious, as were the fries, but I wish opted for chilli greens too as my choice of rocket and spinach didn’t quite match up as well (my fault).

Richard was defeated by the cauliflower cheese – there was a lot of it – but only had good things to say about the wedges and perfectly cooked steak.

By the time we departed, there was a really nice buzz about The Marquess Tavern and it’s clear the message is spreading about their food.

Top 10 things we learnt about the Marquess Tavern when we visited: 1) Located on Canonbury Street near Essex Road station, the Marquess Tavern certainly looks the part: a standalone, all-white building, situated at the junction between residential houses and a leafy public garden, it boasts a picturesque setting.

5) The main room and bar area offers plenty of standing and sitting room, not least with a host of inviting armchairs next to an ornamental fireplace.

7) The Marquess Tavern regularly plays host to events including guest supplier ale and cider tastings, themed menus, media gatherings, private events and functions.

8) The Tavern’s large wine list and canny selection of ales and draught beers - including Meantime lager - ensures that getting progressively sloshed at the weekend is a varied and enjoyable pastime.

10) With quick and friendly service, and a low-key but warm atmosphere, the Marquess Tavern is a proper locals’ pub with a genuine feel for its surroundings, notwithstanding its recent, rather daring revamp....read more

Marquess Tavern | Bars and pubs in Canonbury, London

A Canonbury gastropub in a grand old building on Canonbury Street, just down from Essex Road station.

Craft beer, cocktails and a solid wine list do brisk business but this place is mostly about the food, with meats from Godfreys up the road in Highbury, seafood from Steve Halt, and fruit and veg from the New Covent Garden market.
