And before The Crooked Well was on this site, a bar called The Parisien managed to hold its own against the, you know, marauding street hooligans, and served perfectly acceptable steaks.

Angie and I arrived at 8.30pm on a freezing Tuesday evening, looking for comfort and, more to the point, comfort food.

Angie's chargrilled picanha steak (picanha's a Brazilian cut, somewhere between sirloin and rump, though the meat is "100 per cent British") was simply grilled with a herby butter on the side.

But since, at 1 0.30pm, Camberwell's newest gastropub resembled Edward Hopper's bleak Nighthawks painting, I'd say Hector and Matt and friends need to rethink the atmosphere.

They have some lovely curtains, I believe... About £100 for two, with wine Tipping policy: "Service charge is 10 per cent discretionary, of which 100 per cent goes to the staff; all tips go to the staff" A combination of modern British flavours and rustic French dishes helped make this gastropub the first in the country to be awarded two Michelin stars.

So, J's bizarre starter was a scotch egg with crisp pancetta and an espresso cup of Heinz tomato soup on the side (£5.50).

The scotch egg was a hilariously 'authentic' shape: long, like an egg, and extremely thick, as if someone was very proud of the sausagemeat (rightly so).

I had the duck egg (£6.90), with Jersey Royals (dainty little things, beautifully fried, like croutons of spud), truffle mayo (gorgeous) and wild garlic (very fresh and springy).

I have a rebellious sub-voice saying, 'I'm not sure I'd leave the house for someone else to fry me an egg,' but I quash it with the fact that it came from a duck (the egg, not the voice).

J had the pork cutlet with olive-oil mash, baby leeks, apple and gremolata (£14.75).

The whizzy bells-and-whistles website for the Crooked Well, a smart new food pub in south London's Camberwell, which was previously a French gaff and before that an old boozer, tells you an awful lot about the place.

The Crooked Well, just round the corner, is middle-class Boho London, as if what was nearby didn't exist.

Even £7.50 for a plate of very good smoked salmon, scattered with rounds of sweet, crunchy pickled cucumber and halved soft-boiled quail eggs, doesn't seem extortionate.

More thrilling are the dishes for two: a whole poached sea bass with fennel and samphire, for example or – the one we chose – a rabbit and bacon pie.

(Dan, if you ever do that again…) The fact is that, while I may be pointing up the essential comedy of London's inner-suburban hipsters, anybody living within striking distance of such a food pub would be very pleased indeed to have it.

Tall, upholstered bar chairs perched on Mediterranean ceramic tiles at the wide wooden bar encourage lingering over an aspirational collection of gins and whiskies – cocktails are a special feature of the drinks list, which includes a well-priced selection of less commonplace wines.

The British-with-a-twist menu mixes updated gastropub staples with more exotic game and fish dishes.

Starters were a tad disappointing: ‘crisp polenta’ chips were less than crisp, with the polenta more mushy than grainy.

The chargrilled William Rose rib-eye steak was flavoursome and perfectly cooked, served with Café de Paris butter (herby, spicy) and roasted tomatoes – though the chips were disappointing.

The cheese selection was tempting, but we only had room to share a dense, flourless almond cake, with plump, baked gooseberries and a deliciously light elderberry pannacotta.
