The mum of the family (they’re all involved in the business somewhere along the line), Pary Baban does the cooking, making her own pickles, dips, borek, dolma and all manner of salads and tasty bits which make up their plates.

This article first appeared in Issue 21 of The Peckham Peculiar Pary and Rang at Nandine.

Photo: The Peckham Peculiar On leafy Vestry Road, near the Peckham/Camberwell border, sits Nandine – a family-run café with a Kurdish kitchen that’s something of a hidden gem.

Pary’s nephew is Yada, who runs an excellent Kurdish restaurant just off Rye Lane, along with Peckham institution Ali Baba’s fruit and veg.

Nandine, which means kitchen in Kurdish, has been a long time coming, and it has taken the efforts of the entire family to get it off the ground.

It’s been a while since I wrote about new places in the area to eat and drink, and as they’re generally the most popular posts, let’s do that.

I popped in for a takeaway coffee (a flat white, very good) and had a quick chat with the owner—he says there’s a kitchen in the basement which his partner will cook in, so expect food to come soon.

Nape are a bar, bottle shop and deli specialising in wine and cured meats—it’s a business enterprise of Cannon & Cannon, the local meat specialists.

The bar, at 21 Camberwell Church Street (one of the old library units), opened in December as a pop-up test run, but are now fully launched.

In other food & drink news, there’s a new kebab shop, Tazze, at 22 Camberwell Church Street, in the place where once stood Safa and the short-lived Shanghai Taste.

Nandine at Spike & Earl: pop-up review | Foodism

They're one of the first permanent traders to set up in the soon-to-open Peckham Levels, so if you didn't catch them at Spike + Earl, don't worry, you can still get messy with the mezze later this year.

It took a lot of willpower to turn down the chance to try Spike + Earl's house-made coffee liqueur in their Old Spike Martini.

Nandine's menu was short and sweet – so short, in fact, that you could count the number of dishes on a single hand – and plenty of dishes are there to cater for veggies and vegans.

With some regret, we overlooked the epic-looking veggie mezze, but any food envy was avoided by stuffing our faces with a round of soft and buttery battered artichokes dipped in cooling cucumber yoghurt and offset with sweet bursts of pomegranate, before going full rebound with a 'sleepy falafel' burger.

We didn't ask where its name came from, but we're pretty sure it's because, if you're anything like us, you'll be dreaming about this epic combination of falafel, halloumi and sweet chilli jam for weeks to come.

where to eat and drink in Camberwell

Camberwell is a leafy corner of south east London that has seen many new restaurant openings in recent years and is fast becoming one of London’s most desirable areas.

The quality of ingredients is excellent, with Strianese San Marzano tomatoes and their own Camberwell scotch bonnet ‘nduja (made in collaboration with The Camberwell Arms over the road), topping the pizzas.

We like it best for slices of squidgy, iced carrot cake and huge wedges of towering sponge topped with crazy arrangements of sweets and biscuits from Cat Food Cakes in Lewisham.

The rest of the meze are pretty standard to be honest, but their chopped salad with white Turkish cheese is always fresh and bright, a great accompaniment to the Adana kebab or chicken you’ll be having to follow.

Visit the takeaway counter at the front of the shop, where you will be able to order an Adana which comes in an impossibly thin yet sturdy flatbread with a yoghurt and chilli sauce, grilled veg and salad.

ES Food Newsletter Peckham will gain a major new food, drink and arts destination this autumn as seven floors of its iconic multi-storey car park are transformed into a creative hub of studios, workshops, markets and street food.

The notorious Rye Lane building — which has Frank’s Cafe and Campari Bar on its roof — will become home to Peckham Levels, a temporary project planned to occupy the unused space for the coming six years.

The first five levels will contain workspace for emerging artists, designers and entrepreneurs — primarily from the local area — while the two upper levels will become a food, drinks and event space.

Here’s what to expect, level by level: Ground floor UK's first sake distillery opens in Peckham At its base, on the building’s ground floor, will be a regular market selling fresh produce alongside arts and crafts created by the artists working in the building.
