An all-day café, bar and sandwich joint that plans to reinvent the classic San Francisco-style Dutch crunch bun with a modern, London twist is set to open on Peckham Road this weekend.
Spike + Earl is a new venture from the founders of Old Spike Roastery in Peckham Rye.
It will expand the offering beyond coffee to serve all-day food and drink, seven days a week, with a focus on supporting the homeless community through training and employment.
The food offering will see chefs “elevating the humble sandwich into something you can enjoy for breakfast, lunch or dinner”.
Spike + Earl will open on April 1 at midday in the former Southwark Town Hall at 33 Peckham Road, with a 50 per cent off food and drink offer until April 2.

Nandine at Spike & Earl: pop-up review | Foodism

They're one of the first permanent traders to set up in the soon-to-open Peckham Levels, so if you didn't catch them at Spike + Earl, don't worry, you can still get messy with the mezze later this year.
It took a lot of willpower to turn down the chance to try Spike + Earl's house-made coffee liqueur in their Old Spike Martini.
Nandine's menu was short and sweet – so short, in fact, that you could count the number of dishes on a single hand – and plenty of dishes are there to cater for veggies and vegans.
With some regret, we overlooked the epic-looking veggie mezze, but any food envy was avoided by stuffing our faces with a round of soft and buttery battered artichokes dipped in cooling cucumber yoghurt and offset with sweet bursts of pomegranate, before going full rebound with a 'sleepy falafel' burger.
We didn't ask where its name came from, but we're pretty sure it's because, if you're anything like us, you'll be dreaming about this epic combination of falafel, halloumi and sweet chilli jam for weeks to come.

Peckham-based Old Spike Roastery has been going since 2015, crafting excellent coffee blends while providing barista training to help the homeless get back on their feet.
Spike + Earl is a clean, white space with concrete breeze block tables and white stools to perch on (bring your laptop and join the freelancers who set up for the day with a steady stream of coffee and treats, or pop in with friends for a quick catch up).
There’s a dinky roaster at the back with a swish white coffee roaster to ensure that Old Spike blends are delivered to customers as fresh as possible – try the well-balanced apple and butterscotch notes of the Peruvian Benedict blend.
Punchy bloody marys, and mimosas are also available to order, or combine coffee and cocktails in the vodka, Kahlua and weekly roast espresso Old Spike Martini (the coffee shop turns into a buzzy cocktail bar in the evenings).
Bullseye at Spike + Earl: If you’re after a bigger fill, order one of the bespoke Dutch Crunch sarnies – a light and fluffy sourdough bun with a super crisp, golden glaze.

The first café from do-gooding Peckham roastery Old Spike.
Luckily, though, the coffee geekery is kept to a bare minimum at Spike + Earl, a new café brought to you by bean-slinging social enterprise Old Spike Roastery.
Aesthetically, though, it’s every bit the modern brunch spot.
The latter came in the form of a ‘Dutch crunch’ – a bun with a dry, crunchy exterior and a regularly changing line-up of fillings that are substantial for the price.
Sorry, ‘coffee with milk’.
