And that is just what Yashin Ocean House is – different in a very good way.

Created by the same team as Yashin in Kensington (considered one of the best sushi restaurants in London), Yashin Ocean House is a modern Japanese restaurant that boasts head to tail dining with almost everything on the menu coming from the sea.

The cocktails at Yashin Ocean House are fantastic, and the upscale, unique decor, combined with dim lighting, creates a sophisticated, inviting ambiance.

Set in the perfect location in South Kensington, on a quiet section of Old Brompton Rd, just a few minutes walk from Gloucester RD tube station, Yashin Ocean House is the perfect spot for date night, dinner with a friend, or your next private event.

I was welcomed at Yashin Ocean House as a guest, but as always, my opinions are my own.

I also know Yashin has a sushi bar in Kensington which (although steep in price) is excellent, so its newer sister, which bills itself as "head-to-tail fish", should be worth a look.

A small dish of mackerel bone and fish skin (£5) comes first, a lip-smacking snack, the full spine crisp and complex in flavour, not just salt, and puffs of skin that almost float off their wooden podium.

And "instant-smoked dry-aged sea bass with baby spinach" (£8.30) is a lesson in anticipointment: a glass dome brought to our table (rather modest for sharing plates) is filled with smoke, and lifted to reveal *puff*, a harmonious-looking fan of young leaves with bass arranged on it and more salad leaves above.

But beneath the big chunks of yielding radish are soft clods (ugly word, sorry, but accurate) of tuna collar, a prized bit of the fish.

Mind-blowing Japanese Food at Yashin Ocean House - SilverSpoon ...

Our waiter is originally from Poland, but working in Yashin Ocean House has given him huge enthusiasm for Japanese food and he explained each dish with knowledge and passion.

The restaurant’s signature dish really exemplified the key concept of Yashin Ocean House, that no part of the fish should go to waste, and we were presented with mackerel bones served with crisp vegetables and fish skin.

Restaurant founder, Shinya Ikeda noticed in his early days as a sushi chef that his guests were often drowning sashimi and sushi with soy sauce and incorrectly dipping the rice into the sauce instead of the fish.

The result is an overpowering flavour of soy; now I must admit I love a good helping of soy so I’m rather guilty of this but at Yashin Ocean House the chef prevents this happening by brushing the fish with just the right amount of soy and topping it with a particular accompaniment.

And I’ve been reading up on food traditions, now forget your California rolls, this is more like how sushi is usually served in Japan: Nigri zushi or fish on a very small amount of rice.

It’s a testament to Yashin’s concept and popularity that they’ve survived in a tricky Kensington site: not long before it opened, their old Brompton Road address had had more than its fair share of places.

Still, three years on, they’re still going strong with their Japanese nose-to-tail concept.

Besides fish, there’s also wagyu sushi, sashimi and steak, which should provide an idea of quite how pricey this can be, just like its sister sushi bar not far away on Argyll Road.

Still, you’ll drink it down in rather gorgeous surroundings, the green topped central bar drawing the room’s focus, and rightly so.

A nice hint of eccentricity in an otherwise straight-laced place.

Please note, Yashin Ocean House is now operating under new management, with a new menu of hot and cold small plates, grilled fish, sashimi, wagyu beef (and more).

Set up by the same team as Yashin in Kensington (one of the best sushi restaurants in London), the eat-everything approach is more than just a gimmick.

In Japan there’s nothing unusual about snacking on deep-fried fish spines in a smart restaurant (they’re a bit like crisps), so why not do the same in London?

The bone-straight mackerel skeleton came with sweet vegetable crisps – a good contrast to the savoury fried fish frame.

All of the six or so small plates we tried were good, but the standout dish was a dinky ice-cream cone-like wafer filled with layers of salmon eggs, whipped double cream and pak choi.
