After launching a restaurant on the Chelsea site where his career began, Gordon Ramsay muses on how far he has come since his days at the Aubergine, as Catherine McCabe finds out If chefs were to regale their children with dramatic foodie bedtime stories, the tale of Aubergine restaurant would be the big finish.

The Aubergine walk-out led to Restaurant Gordon Ramsay on Royal Hospital Road in Chelsea, the venue that placed his name on an international platform, and became the flagship for the restaurant empire he controls today.

Following more than two years of talks with the previous owners, Ramsay has returned to where it all began, launching a new restaurant on the original Aubergine site, 11 Park Walk.

The maze Grill in Chelsea represents the cosy restaurant experience that diners are looking for, in keeping with the strong community feeling.

On my recent trip to London to visit my cousin Sophia Patricia Mai, we and our respective partners treated ourselves to dinner at Maze Grill Park Walk.

On Sophia’s recommendation, I went for the sashimi platter, while Elliot had the tuna tartare roll and Ste went for soft shell crab sliders.

Our wine glasses were never allowed to empty at any time as our waiter flitted back and forth to replenish them, and when the beef arrived I could barely contain my enthusiasm!

I was tempted by the cheese board, seeing as I had in fact already had a rather indulgent dessert waffle at The Ivy Chelsea Garden earlier in the day, but Ste has his eye on the Monkey Bread sharer, so we went for that.

We had a delicious meal, plenty of time to enjoy it, and were just a short walk from quirky bars to continue the evening.

A range of poultry and fish is also on offer, along with seasonal specials.

‘Tuesday Sharing’ sees deals on sides, starters and desserts, while a Steak Frites or Sushi Salad deal is available until 6pm from Monday to Friday.

Expect a huge selection of steaks (from £14); fish such as salmon fillet or halibut on the bone (£18 and £22); short rib burgers (£14); and fried chicken (£16).

There are a few healthy options – like an excellent, shimmeringly fresh, if incongruous, sashimi platter (£16) – but mostly it’s about posh fast food; steaks (from £14), burgers (£14), buffalo chicken (decorous fillets, not messy wings, £4 for a small plate), or delicious little soft shell crab sliders: crisp battered crab spilling out and oozing with cocktail sauce (£11 as a starter).

The short rib burger was crammed into a glossy brioche bun with melted cheese escaping from the sides and plenty of juicy pickles and bacon.

My starter of soft shell crab sliders were mouth-size bites of crunchy tempura crab – a paprika and coriander-seasoned batter balanced out the sweet and succulent crab, which came with generous dollops of flamingo-pink cocktail sauce (£11).

With green leather banquettes and eclectic art, there’s nothing outrageously individual about how Maze Grill looks; but the Americaninspired, fashionably indulgent food is served prettily.

ES Food Newsletter You know you’re dining in Maze Grill off the Fulham Road when a dapper, sun-drenched Boris Becker blocks the restaurant doorway.

Especially on the sumptuous Park Walk, where the second rendition of Gordon Ramsay’s high-end sushi and grill joint now lives.

Maze Grill Park Walk inhabits the site where Ramsay’s Aubergine sat in the 1990s.

Another Maze Grill is opening soon on Royal Hospital Road, so clearly Gordon’s days of frightening the general public have diminished.
