Brinkley's

Brinkleys Restaurants London

It was a surprise party and the organiser was well looked after by the staff.

Everything ran smoothly and we were all well watered by the attentive staff.

Bandol, Chelsea restaurant review | Culture Whisper

Review analysis

This new Nicoise and Provencal restaurant, named after French region of Bandol, has a similar emphasis to its South Kensington sister, tucked discreetly away on Hollywood Road, that South West London residential no-man's-land.

There's nothing outback, though, about Bandol's cuisine: with a menu designed by Zsolt Ferencz of Scott’s Restaurant, the emphasis here is on fresh, simple ingredients – cooked to utter perfection.

An amuse bouche of Provencal red onion on brioche and dressed with seasonal olives is enough to trigger the senses, transporting us straight to the sunny climes of Southern France – from whence you're free to peruse the rest of Bandol's delectable starters on offer.

No Bandol inspired menu would be complete without a traditional Bouillabaisse, and this Chelsea french restaurant serves theirs with red mullet, gurnard, tiger prawns and mussels: gently steeped in a rich bisque, this is authentic French haute cuisine, served, of course, with a traditional French rouille.

Whilst the restaurant wholly transports you in flavour to the rolling landscapes of the French Riviera, Bandol's interior design channels a more urban vibe: walking past long copper bar you'll see brass lamps hanging from the ceiling, exposed lightbulbs shedding a rich glow on the cuisine, served on zinc tables of two.

In dining terms, Brinkley's is a very respectable age indeed - it's been open for almost 30 years.

Outside there are pavement tables for smokers and arguing couples, and next door is Brinkley's Wine Gallery.

Plump and pale little parcels of tender chicken arrived, along with a sweet soy sauce.

Next (and probably influenced by the excellent blanket coverage of the US elections in the British media), I chose a Brinkley's burger, which came with chips, crispy onions and more rocket.

A slab of light, rich cake and a smooth, gooey sauce; the kind of pudding you might choose for your last-ever meal.

I'm away from home 10 months a year playing cricket - even when we play in England it will be out of London -which means I eat out most of the time.

So, the rare times when I am in London, pretty much my favourite thing to do is to have a night in, spent on the couch eating a delicious home-made lasagne or a simple takeaway.

The menu at Brinkley's is simple - I like the shepherd's pie, burgers and salads - and the portions are a good size so you don't leave wanting a McDonald's on your way home.

Our first meal together was at Zuma [the Japanese restaurant in central London].

Initially more nouvelle cuisine, owner John Brinkley has built a chain of restaurants in London using the same blueprint of a simple, modern European menu.

This Wandsworth Common bar and restaurant is one of a few south-west London spots from the Brinkley's group - they're responsible for Joe's Brasserie in Wandsworth too, as well as the Wine Gallery and the eponymous, mononymous Chelsea flagship.

As with all Brinkley's venues, the wine list is a focus here - the low mark ups again proving a draw.

Expect a list with an old world slant, though well-known wine-making regions in New Zealand, South Africa, USA and Australia also feature prominently.

The food menu is catholic, too.

Sunday roasts and party menus are available, too.
