French chef Leslie Hottiaux (ex-Baduzzi and The Grove) works her magic with pork meat in the kitchen, while partner Mo Koski (The Grove, Sidart and Meredith’s) is front of house, providing a laid-back yet efficient service that is all too often hard to find in Auckland.

The intimate wine bar is a family affair: the wooden tables were made by Hottiaux’s father during a trip to New Zealand from his native Toulouse; Koski’s Finnish father, now a Pakuranga man, is in charge of the greenery that adorns the riddling rack on the wall, while the wine bottle lampshades were cut by Koski using his dad’s “old school bottle cutter that’s older than me”.

The list is a reflection of Koski’s wandering palate, providing a blend of New Zealand and international wines.

There are more than 25 wines by the glass, and Koski offers a try-before-you-buy sample at the table.

And if there’s a wine you’d like to try by the glass that’s only by the bottle, a note at the bottom of the list advises you to pipe up as “Maybe the Wine Gods are Smiling”.

Tucked beneath the Victorian cellar arches of The Ampersand Hotel, Apero brings a shot of fresh Mediterranean style to the heart of South Kensington.

Softly lit, with cool white metro tiles and exposed brick walls, Apero is an intimate, laidback restaurant in Kensington where you can catch up over a shared plate of something deliciously simple and modern.

Menus inspired by the Mediterranean's best ingredients and the region's most enduring flavours are popular with both locals and hotel guests, who gather here from breakfast to late evening.

The buzzy bar at Apero, tended by staff with a real passion for what they serve, is an understated but glamorous place to get into the ‘aperitivo' spirit with a signature cocktail or glass of wine before dinner.

Review of London Mediterranean restaurant Apero by Andy Hayler ...

The more regular wines include Michel Bettili Jvbilvm Pinot Grigio Zibibbo 2011 at £28.50 for a wine that you can find in the high street for around £8, La Zouina Epicuria Chardonnay 2006 at £48 for a wine that you can find in a shop for £15, and Vino di Anna Jeudi 2010 at £50 for a wine that retails at around £14.

The focaccia (£2.50) was made from scratch in the kitchen, and was good, having nicely caramelized onions on top and a texture that, though rather denser than a classical focaccia, was very pleasant (14/20).

Beetroot risotto (£7) worked well, the rice having good texture, the beetroot’s earthy flavour working nicely with the rice (14/20).

Classical tiramisu (£7.50) was excellent, with plenty of coffee flavour and good texture (easily 14/20) Even better was passion fruit rum baba (£6.50), the mango foam and passion fruit flavor coming through well, the bread base around the side of the glass in which it was served moist and not having too much rum to overwhelm the fruit (15/20).

Overall Apero offers good quality food at a reasonable price point, much better than the dining rooms of many London hotels.

Exposed brick walls, a long thin room, wooden furniture, soft light, friendly people working the floor.

Leslie Hottiaux, the co-owner and chef, had me at first bite, and right through the meal she never let me go.

There was a special of sweetbreads, served on a little plate with a surprising bed of crème fraîche.

There’s something for everyone — a charcuterie platter for the group, a choice of delectable veggie dishes, that little sweetbreads offering for the individual.

Apero is one of those bistro/bars where you can drink merrily and eat lovely food, but because the menu is short and contains a lot of small plates and “shared plates”, it’s not as easy as it may look to construct a proper dinner.

The idea, if not sadly the habit, has caught on in London and a restaurant where that hour pertains all day, incorporating small plates of Italian morsels, would appear to be very much alla moda.

If Apero were located on some Soho sidestreet or Shoreditch loft, it would probably be hard to get a table.

Mercifully, the cocktails have an authentic Italian twist, involving such sophisticated elixirs as Amer Picon and Fernet Branca.

A Last Word cocktail to toast a million-pound business idea that I hit upon with an old friend.
