Scotchtails / Borough Market

The recent revival of the humble scotch egg as an artisan snack is due in no small part to the team behind Scotchtails, Dom Hamdy and Oli Hiam.

Each warm, crispy-shelled scotchie is cut open to reveal generous layers of meat—pulled pork from Ginger Pig, black pudding, chorizo or lamb and mint are some popular specials—encasing a perfectly cooked egg with an invitingly gooey yolk, served with sweet potato fries and baby leaf salad.

The porridge at this cleaned-lined Scandi café is made to a traditional Nordic recipe, with rolled oats simmered in full-fat Kentish cow’s milk until rich and creamy.

The duo behind gourmet scotch egg brand Scotchtails are launching a Nordic-inspired restaurant and coffee shop in Covent Garden in late July.

University friends Dominic Hamdy (23) and Oliver Hiam (24) are opening Lundenwic – an all-day dining concept serving fresh salads, sandwiches and toasties alongside specialty coffees, homemade nut milks and juices.

Named after one of the capital's original fifth Century Anglo-Saxon settlements, Lundenwic is designed to replicate the style and aesthetics of Copenhagen cafes in London.

Lundenwic is set to take its coffee as seriously as its food, with Stan Przemek – previously of Flat White, Milk Bar and TAP Coffee – appointed as head of coffee for the site.

It is the first restaurant venture from Hiam and Hamdy, who since 2013 have grown the Scotchtail brand from a stall in Berwich Street market to a regular Borough Market site - with the eggs now selling in Selfridges Food Hall, Wholefoods and several London delis.

The site will open from 7am-7pm Monday to Saturday at 45 Aldwych, Covent Garden, London.

Seeking to ‘bring the scotch egg bang up to date’ the team put a high emphasis on quality ingredients, using locally sourced Burford Browns with a rich, vibrant yolk.

From traditional British flavours like rich black pudding or cumberland sausage to Spanish chorizo and lamb & mint, their eggs never cease to excite the tastebuds.

There are also a range of interesting vegetarian options: their Mushroom & Sage, Beetroot & Lentil, or sweet potato falafel enclosed eggs will have veggie Londoners salivating at the prospect.

Each succulent morsel is lovingly hand-made by the pair in Hackney, and cooked to order each day.

The warm scotch eggs are supplied to hungry workers in a kraft cardboard meal box, along with hot and crispy sweet potato fries, on a bed of rocket and with a choice of condiments.

A compact coffee shop off Aldwych with Scandi style, serving Workshop coffee, pastries, fantastic toasties and some perked-up porridge, by the founders of Scotchtails, Oliver Hiam and Dominic Hamdy.

The menu is short, including a couple of salads, porridges and toasties, but what there is they’re doing well.

Go for the pickled peach, green beans, feta and hazelnut salad box for lunch, or a roast broccoli, chilli, almond and cheddar toastie.

We went for a breakfast, and were comforted by a flat white and a generous, stylish-looking bowl of porridge topped with on-trend ingredients.

Good value: generous portion of porridge £4, flat white £2.90, regular salads from £6.
