Far Out Recordings present: Marcos Valle - The Jazz Cafe

When it comes to Brazilian music, there aren’t many names bigger than Marcos Valle.

An undisputed legend of South American music, his fusion of samba, bossa nova, rock and jazz has resulted in countless classic records, from Samba ’68 and his self titled album Marcos Valle to Previsão Do Tempo and the more recent Contrasts on Far Out Recordings.

Still an ardent composer and performer to this day, it’s an honour to welcome him back to the Jazz Cafe debut this summer.

REVIEW - Hyatt Regency London The Churchill : Regency Suite w ...

The Churchill has a large number of entry level suites and always seems to have availability.

This is one of the better club lounges I have ever visited and certainly puts the Conrad London St James to shame.

The Churchill is a very well located hotel which manages to be within a two minute walk of some of London’s busiest shopping and dining streets, whilst retaining an air of calm and tranquility overlooking the Portman Square Park.

The club lounge itself was a quiet and elegant place to relax and offered a wide variety of high quality food and drink.

I had my doubts about The Conrad St James, now when somebody asks me for a recommended hotel in London… I know where to send them instead.

Review of Hispania Spanish tapas in London by Andy hayler July ...

A few yards from the Bank of England is Hispania, an ambitious opening that at this stage is a tapas bar and shop, but later in 2013 will feature a 35-seat fine dining restaurant.

The short wine list started at £21 and had selections such as Cuatro Rayas Verdejo at £28 for a wine that you can find in the high street for £6, Mar de Frades sparkling Albarino NV at £55 for a wine that retails at around £18, and Merto Tempranillo at £82 for a wine that varies in price substantially by vintage, but where a recent vintage was around £57 in one shop.

To be sure, Spanish wines do not have quite the same level of vintage variation as more northerly wine-growing areas, but there is certainly variation, and anyone interested in wine will want to know the vintage that they are about to order.

Slightly creamier in texture than a classic gazpacho, this had deep tomato flavour, and just the right amount of olive oil, with enough of a vinegar kick to balance the oil (14/20).

Chorizo and potato tortilla (£6.50) was very good, the texture as it should be, the chorizo adding a useful extra flavour to the classic potato filling (14/20).

A famous name in Asturias, north-west Spain, Marcos Morán is executive chef at Hispania restaurant in the City of London Hispania is like something out of Grand Designs.

High-flying Morán is a famous name in Asturias, north-west Spain, where he is the fifth generation of his family to run the prestigious Michelin-starred restaurant, Casa Gerardo.

In Spain, my father runs the kitchen when I’m not there, and in London I have my brilliant head chef Iván Ortiz.

After graduating, Morán embarked on a four-year apprenticeship at some of the greatest restaurants in Spain, if not the world.

Hugely enriched by his experiences, Morán returned to Asturias to assume the mantle of head chef at Casa Gerardo.

That means pizzas, lasagne bolognese al forno, penne arrabiata and escalope of chicken Milanese alongside burgers, buffalo wings, hickory smoked pulled pork and a New Orleans cajun steak.

Desserts follow the theme – expect Sicilian lemon sorbet and a classic affogato next to New York chocolate brownies, knickerbocker glorys and strawberry ice cream sundaes.
