Hawksmoor Borough
Borough - Hawksmoor
A short walk from London Bridge and on the edge of one of the best produce markets in the country, Hawksmoor Borough is located in a former hops warehouse that was repurposed by ‘colonial and foreign fruit’ merchants J. O. Sims in 1932 as a fruit warehouse and auction hall.
Our chefs wander around the market each morning to find inspiration for our regularly changing Market Specials menu which runs alongside a main menu focusing on grass-fed beef and sustainable seafood.
There’s also the Cook’s Room with its own private kitchen which is available for feasting menus, private hire and special evenings with guest chefs.
On Mondays corkage is £5 all day and on Sundays there are roasts that Observer Food Monthly named amongst the best in the UK.
Our Express Menu (£25 for 2 courses, £28 for 3) is available from 12pm until 6pm and after 9:30pm every Monday to Saturday.

For back in 2011, Saff had arranged a surprise birthday meal for me and my nearest and dearest at Hawksmoor Seven Dials.
Obviously this was one of the best nights of my life – amazing company, fantastic food and a brilliant atmosphere – I even had my very own Hawksmoor birthday menu printed up.
But the Borough restaurant is a little brighter, due to the large windows, warehouse doors and white painted walls (well the top half anyway, the bottom half are painted black).
Saff went for the Hop House Sour – hoppy gin, malt, lemon, egg white and IPA, a proper sour with a subtle flavour of beer.
We couldn’t make our minds up so had two sides each – Mash and gravy (£4.50) and Cauliflower cheese (£6) for me plus Beef dripping fries (£4.50) and Evesham asparagus (£5.50) for Saff.

Seafood comes from Brixham market, masterminded by Mitch Tonks of vaunted restaurant The Seahorse, while veg is also seasonal, local and sustainable.
The group's latest site, in Borough Market, goes one step further with this ethos, using produce from its neighbouring suppliers like Cannon & Cannon charcuterie, Wright Brothers' oysters and veg from Natoora.
As for wine, we were guided by the excellent sommelier, and plumped for a light, juicy, spicy red Les Granges Paquenesses 'Le Plou' 2015 poulsard from Jura, France, which was on a dedicated wine list curated to pair with the Market Specials menu.
But while the standard menu is as incredible as usual, if you don't order largely from the Market Specials list here, you're doing something very wrong.
We had Wright Brothers' oysters, roasted with umami-laden bone marrow; heritage tomatoes topped with melting lardo; monkfish, grilled simply over charcoal; and Jersey Royals, thick spears of asparagus, and a host of other seasonal veg.

On the Menu: Whilst Hawksmoor is renowned for its steak, it isn’t just about cuts of meat.
To start you’ll find the likes of Salcombe crab on toast; potted beef and bacon with Yorkshires and Old Spot belly ribs.
Main courses, beyond the steaks, include lemon sole, Salt Marsh lamb chops with Isle of Bara cockles and the Hawksmoor burger.
It’s slick but relaxed; the sort of place you want to sit and eat steak with plenty of mac n cheese and chips.
We chose the Dear Old Pal from the Pre-Prandials – drinks to be had just before a meal – it’s a smoky Irish take on the Old Pal made from Redbreast 12 yr, Noilly Pratt and a smoky Lapsang Campari.

A Borough branch of the ace steakhouse chain, with a market twist.
The opening of Hawksmoor Borough – located in a former hops and fruit warehouse just off the market – is reason enough for meaty virgins (matron!)
The menu includes a smattering of Hawksmoor classics, as well as the de rigeur list of beefy cuts struck off a chalkboard as the night progresses, and a typically ace cocktail list.
For mains, a skillet of salt marsh lamb chops with Poole clams, flecked with parsley and thyme, was a meticulous melding of earthy, buttery flesh – on the bone and perfect pink, the thick ribbons of fat just crisping – and subtle seaside tang.
A thick wedge of monkfish was better still, the densely meaty flesh smoky from the charcoal grill, dribbled with butter and given a fragrant kick with the subtle inclusion of dried fennel, oregano and thyme.
