Making the return to the office bearable was an invite from the Tombo Poke team in Fitzrovia – London’s first poké and matcha bar.

The waitress explained the menu and concept to us and in case you’re wondering, ‘Poké’ is pronounced ‘Poh-Kay’ – we checked 😉 Zohra ordered one of the Signature Poké bowls – Hawaiian style sushi bowls with sliced raw fish.

Zohra’s Kyoto Kaisen bowl was filled with salmon and tuna sashimi as well as citrus ponzu, avocado and crispy shallots.

Born in London in 1974, Hello Kitty has enjoyed a homecoming of sorts since Tombo Poké & Matcha Bar in Fitzrovia launched a Hello Kitty pop-up store on 1 September 2017.

Tombo Fitzrovia – which opened in July 2017 following the success of Tombo South Kensington and Soho with their top grade sashimi, Japanese-style poké dishes and award-winning matcha tea – will be celebrating one of Sanrio’s most famous characters with Hello Kitty-inspired poké bowls, ice cream sundaes, cupcakes and other desserts, as well as matcha tea featuring exclusive Hello Kitty designs.

You can also pick up a range of Tombo created bespoke Hello Kitty tea, including ceremonial grade matcha tins, matcha latte mix, and new flavour Kukicha green tea infused with the Japanese citrus fruit yuzu.

Tombo’s two other outlets in South Kensington and Soho will also be stocking a range of Hello Kitty merchandise and offering a selection of the limited-edition menu items too.

And we can tell you, the menu is absolutely delicious… Visit the Hello Kitty Cafe at 4 Windmill Street, Fitzrovia W1T 2JL; tombopoke.com

Poke in London review: Tombo vs Black Roe vs the rest | The Picky ...

Most of Ahi Poke’s preset poke (you can customise your own if you wish) substitute rice with other grain or vegetable bases which is probably just as well given the poor quality of the rice included with the Tuna Oahu.

Although a little unbalanced, there’s still enough to enjoy in Black Roe’s poke, especially the tuna and salmon variants, to make this Mayfair restaurant worth seeking out instead of the competition if you want a light yet filling meal.

All of Eat Poke’s salads used small grain rice that was a touch too firm, although it wasn’t bad as Ahi Poke in this regard.

Although the salmon poke used small cubes of unremarkable fish, this poke was still relatively pleasing thanks to the soft, malty rice, firm edamame and the double umami punch of seaweed and soy sauce.

Tuna poke was much the same as the salmon, but without the edamame and, of course, big meaty cubes of tuna taking the place of the salmon.

Summing it all up: Select from Tombo’s classic options or build-your-own poké bowl at their newest venue in Fitzrovia, and indulge in a matcha green tea sundae.

After a successful run of openings in South Ken and Soho, poke restaurant and matcha bar Tombo will open their third restaurant on Fitzrovia’s Windmill Street.

From their menu of sushi-style fish and rice bowls (if you’re not yet familiar with the poke craze, think sushi via the Pacific, and in Tombo’s case, back via Japan again) you can pick from several familiar choices.

There’s the Classic Poke with salmon or tuna with sesame soy and nori, the Terriayki Chicken, the Salmon Avocado Lux with wasabi soy and salmon roe and the Spicy Mayo Prawn with sriracha mayo, crispy shallots and shichimi chilli .

While you’re there, you can pick up a cup of bright green, antioxidant-rich matcha tea from their special bar, where it’s made up whisked in the traditional Japanese style, or skip the healthy part and go straight to the matcha ice cream sundae or matcha tart.

Tombo Pokē & Matcha Bar | Restaurants in Soho, London

An airy Soho café serving sushi bowls plus all things matcha.

However, Tombo makes no reference to the dish’s Hawaiian roots, instead opting for a minimal sushi bar vibe with familiar Japanese sides like hijiki (seaweed) salad and miso soup.

As a poké virgin, I found the build-your-own menu daunting; the signature bowls were more accessible, with variations on marinated salmon or tuna over black and white rice or courgetti.

Ticking another bandwagon box is the accompanying matcha menu: green stuff galore from teas and lattes to desserts and juices.

When you compare these prices to those of Soho’s many Japanese lunch joints, Tombo doesn’t quite match(a) up.
