O'Neill's, Kings Cross

Review analysis
location   staff   food   drinks

‘This place is rife with bag and purse thieves,’ warns Google as I search for directions to O’Neill’s on Euston Road.

Taking that into account as well as the charms of the surrounding area: Kings Cross train station across the road; student digs and youth hostel either side; a row of grotty takeaways and a constant stream of traffic, it’s not the best first impression and certainly not the kind of place I’d choose to hang out with my friends.

I’m a massive snob when it comes to judging pubs by their cover, so I was expecting sticky floors, useless staff and my purse to be nicked as I walked through the door – you can blame the internet for the latter.

They all offer the usual Irish pub charms: exports such as Guinness, Caffreys and Magners on tap, cheap and satisfying pub grub, witty one-liners scrawled on the wall advising what you should and shouldn’t do with another man’s whiskey or wife, the latest sport on show, and a team of jolly staff keen to ensure that your eve is full of some good craic (not to be confused with anything Pete Doherty might be carrying on his personage).

Those minor discrepancies aside, O’Neill’s ticked all the necessary ‘good pub’ boxes and we were all smiles when we left.
