45 Jermyn Street, restaurant review: Fortnum & Mason's new place ...

The name George "Beau" Brummell recalls a vanished London.

An icon of Regency England, he updated the uniform of Eton with a gold buckle, left Oxford at 16, served in the military, befriended George IV, and then became the toast of posh London society, pretty much inventing modern dandyism along the way.

A statue of Brummell, pregnant with aristocratic pomposity, stands erect in Jermyn Street, part of St James's, the London quarter that – after Mayfair across the other side of Piccadilly – is most inaccessible.

For what it's worth, this place, right in the shadow of Regency England's foremost dandy, provides good value for money – even in St James's.

Review: Afternoon Tea at Fortnum and Masons | Soy Division

Afternoon tea is a British institution and Fortnums does it extremely well.

Obviously, eating afternoon tea at somewhere like Fortnums is not going to be cheap (£40 for their own classic blends and £44 for a single estate tea like mine) But I’m happy to report that they will refresh any of the plates for you as many times as you like.

The bread was light and fluffy and not at all dry – previously when I’ve had afternoon tea you could tell the sandwiches were not fresh due to the bread being dry.

I know many people would be unhappy with a fruit salad to top off their afternoon tea but for me it was lovely.

At the end of our tea we were offered more cake – sadly none of it was vegan but I took a slice of Victoria sandwich home for my mum.

REVIEW: The Gallery, Fortnum and Mason, Piccadilly, St James ...

busyness   food   menu   desserts

Fight your way through the crowds, to the back of the building and up the stairs to the restaurant – everything does calm down a little.

Utilising the best ingredients they stock in their food hall its a great way to see how good the produce, and the quality of what they sell is here.

The only real downside to all of this is that social media, and various sites do not list The Gallery restaurant making it hard to read about – but good old Zomato list every singel restaurant in Fortnums.

With a good sprinkling of salt and not an ounce of oil in sight my only complaint would be that they’re not serving them from a small window out the side of the restaurant.

Despite a slightly underwhelming dessert there is no doubt that The Gallery restaurant have got simple, quality led cooking down to perfection.

Fortnum Mason’s New Restaurant: Snails, Style and Inexpensive Wines All-day brasserie 45 Jermyn St. succeeds a decades-old star in a prime central location.

Source: Gemma Bell First up is Welsh rarebit (£9.50), which has been on the menu at Fortnum since 1926.

The starters are more interesting than the mains, which include a flavorful Glenarm Estate rib steak with Café de Paris butter (£33.50) and more modestly priced options such as calves' liver with bubble squeak (£16.25).

(The Fountain was home to the first soda fountain in the U.K.) Take one single option: Strawberry, Neroli Orange Blossom Syrup, Cognac, Soda, Peanut Butter Ice Cream (£12.50) .

Source: Gemma Bell I could happily spend an afternoon devouring the Mexicana coupe (tangerine ice cream with pineapple) or the Victoria (fruits soaked in Champagne with strawberry pistachio ice cream).
