St. JOHN Maltby

St. JOHN Maltby

St. JOHN has three restaurants, a bakery, a winery and a wine company. Each adheres to the distinct style and philosophy which is so integral to St. JOHN and which has been so influential.

St. JOHN

The third and most recent St. JOHN restaurant, opened in 2014 in a railway arch on Maltby Street as part of the burgeoning Bermondsey food scene.

During the weekend bustling Maltby Street Market takes place on our doorstep and you can follow the railway tracks along the arches to Spa Terminus where cheese mongers, vegetable wholesalers, craft breweries and some of the finest suppliers in London ply their trade.

St. JOHN Maltby is where we focus our wine activities, with an emphasis on interesting wines by the glass and delicious small plates to share.

REVIEW: St. John Maltby, Maltby Street, Borough - The Foodaholic

If you’ve heard of St. John Maltby before then there’s a good chance you know it because of its famous bakery (or Michelin starred St. John in Farringdon) as the bread offering, fresh out of the oven was just as epic as I remember.

To my surprise the dish wasn’t anything like I had imagined – I was waiting for a medium-rare cooked prickly tongue on the plate but actually it was very well-done, a little charred and very flavoursome.

We couldn’t have visited St. John Maltby and not tried one of their most famous dishes – Welsh rarebit.

Another famous creation from St. John Maltby was the Eccles cake.

I’d definitely come back to St. John Maltby for some good wine, chilled atmosphere and legendary Eccles cakes – but I might give the offal a miss.

On weekends, this bare-bones St. John outpost set under a railway arch serves brilliant custard- and jelly-filled brioche doughnuts (and other food, too).

The food stalls that set up on this street on weekends can be intense to weave through, but it’s worth it.

Hours vary daily, so check before you go.

And don’t get a doughnut to go unless you plan to eat it within the hour—they don’t travel well.
