"When my food arrives on a plate which I could only describe “platter” in size, I can see – and taste – why people keep coming back" If you’ve always thought that doner kebabs belong to the boozy recesses of a 2am walk home from the pub, you might want to think again, writes Kirsty Purnell… The owner of Bermondsey’s recently refurbished Golden Grill & Fish Bar, Oz Ergun, has taken all the best bits of a kebab shop – and then added some.
While you can still get your hands on the traditional trimmings – doner meat, lashings of garlic sauce and fluffy pitta – Oz used his refurb as an opportunity to add a new dimension to the shop’s offering, including a 30-cover seating area, an alcohol license, hot drinks and the good old British favourite, fish and chips.
On the menu front, they’ve got a five-strong starter selection (including Calamari and Halloumi) and for mains, fish and chips, chicken, kebabs (naturally) and falafel for the veggies among you.
And when my food arrives on a plate which I could only describe “platter” in size, I can see – and taste – why people keep coming back.
Taking the recommendation of Oz, I went for mixed kebab – doner meat and chicken shish – and chips, along with some halloumi.
