In London’s summer months, there’s no better spot for an al fresco lunch than the terrace of La Poule au Pot.

It’s no surprise that La Poule au Pot has been voted “best for romance” in the whole of London by Hardens guide for many years in succession.

I followed this with a fillet steak served with béarnaise sauce  and chunky frites, and my companion had the original house dish, La poule au pot.

Nestled between Sloane Square’s Royal Court Theatre, Cadogan Hall, the Apollo Victoria Theatre and the Victoria Palace Theatre, the restaurant has now extended its lunch Table d’Hôte menu to a pre-theatre menu, (available Monday to Saturday, 12pm to 6pm).

Despite scalding plates and some unsmiling staff, La Poule au Pot was buzzing, and I can see why.

La Poule au Pot - London Restaurant Reviews | Hardens

La Poule au Pot has been a Belgravia institution for as long as anyone cares to remember.

It is no surprise that La Poule has been voted “best for romance” in the whole of London in Hardens guide for the nth year in succession.

Where better to take a special date for a pre-Christmas treat than a romantic French bistro that's still going strong after nearly 50 years?

For it quickly transpired there could be no worse choice of venue for anyone planning to seduce Simon than La Poule Au Pot, most venerable and consistent of Belgravia bistros, and as thriving as ever it was since opening in 1962.

There can't be a more charming, cosy, nook-and-crannyish restaurant, and even this Meldrovian grump (me, that is; not Simon) could take no umbrage at having to squeeze up against walls to let the waiter pass and guide us to what was, for two gentlemen d'un certain girth, a tiny table.

Much like Simon back in 1987, I was in love even before the arrival of a menu laden with every classical bistro dish you dream about but seldom find.

In the event we eschewed this fossilised piece of culinary social history, written only in French (the arrogant buggers), because the vast list of set menu dishes rattled off by the waiter sounded so enticing.
